Fire's 16th Anniversary party

Just a quick reminder that October 8 is the date of the Fire's 16th anniversary. The club is honoring the day with a celebration to be held at the Toyota Park Stadium Club from 6:30 to 9:30 tonight.

The winning design for the third kit contest will be unveiled as part of the festivities.

  • Did the black jersey really win? Why did that jersey win? Well at least I don't have any desire to buy it, unlike the other two finalists. Lame.

  • In reply to TomazPP:

A clear case of the fans getting it wrong on this one,

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

As soon as I saw it was a finalist, I could completely see us going down the same road as the Galaxy did w/ their 3rd kit. No one liked it, yet it somehow won.

So it goes. Leave it to the masses to pick a SJ Earthquakes knockoff. lol

  • In reply to Jeff Krause:

Maybe the FO is setting us up for a dynamite acquisition of Steven Lenhart during the off-season. I'm sure he's knack for scoring late goals will lead us to another .500 season! #sarcasm

  • In reply to c0quito18:

Another Chia Pet promotion can't be far behind. :)

But seriously, fans should have no one to blame but themselves for this one. I suspect many people either assumed the winner was going to be the flag kit and didn't vote or got tired of the contest after round one. I also think a lot of the more "casual" fans probably voted for the black jersey just because it was black. Earthquake look and mono-chrome badge be damned.

Having three finalists also splits the vote and really leaves it up for grabs. Maybe they'll finally get it right one of these years.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

I actually bought an old Puma Flag jersey off of eBay, however, it's a XXL so it'll have to be a cold-weather jersey underneath a couple layers.

Also got a replica Sting jersey off of eBay. I think we need to start this Sting blog, GR!

  • In reply to c0quito18:

If you ever have the desire to trade for that Puma flag kit, get at me c0quito. XXL jerseys are my jam. :)

  • In reply to Jeff Krause:

And I don't really blame the FO for this one. Yes, it should've been down to two finalists instead of three, but other than that, my only complaint (if you could really even call it that) was allowing so many votes per day. I voted for the one I liked, but I had no desire to take the time to vote 12 times a day, numerous days in a row. One vote per day would've been more feasible to me, but 12 votes every day just meant it came down to whichever artist was best at getting friends/family to vote the max number of times per day.

In the end, I personally was content to cast my vote and let the chips fall where they may. I don't like the choice, but really I wasn't crazy about any of them. Still, I'm interested in seeing what it looks like when it finally materializes.

  • In reply to Jeff Krause:

Yeah, you can't really blame the FO other than the spam-happy voting process, but it's not like that was biased to one design over another.

That said, I am worried that the FO is going to use this as a reason to never make an actual flag jersey, and to quash further attempts by the fanbase to demand one. They can now pull out the "you had a chance to design your own and you chose a different design." Also this may add ammunition to the claim that a flag jersey won't sell well, as I'd be surprised if the winning jersey sells (m)any.

Also, on a more personal/selfish note, I'm bummed to see the one design I felt was entirely worse than my own win.

  • In reply to Jeff Krause:

Another issue with the voting is that the 'flag" jersey design that was chosen as a top five finalist was pretty bland.

  • In reply to Jeff Krause:

My thought exactly. Bad enough the away jersey makes me think it's a New England jersey. Now we have a third jersey that makes us look like the Quakes.

  • Blas Perez out for FC Dallas this weekend. Here's the full list of absent players......

  • Yeah, I was already saving my pennies for the blue flag jersey. No desire to get this 3rd kit.

  • Well, the fact that you could vote ten times, per email address per day opened up the voting to being stacked by really determined folk. (I'd love to see a breakdown of total votes by email addresses for all three finalists.)

  • In reply to BrianC.:

I'd love to see how close the voting was in terms of total votes for each finalist.

  • There is match with Eastern Conference impact tonight...Sporting KC is at Houston.

    Mid week picks

    Sporting KC 1 Houston 1
    Vancouver 1 Seattle 2
    Colorado 2 San Jose 2

    picks record 139/296

  • Hou-KC TIE
    Van-Sea Sea
    SJ-Col Col

  • In reply to BrianC.:

That's a pretty good rate at 75 out of 115.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

I'm kinda surprised myself. I did have a couple good weeks when I got like 7 of 9, so that helped with my differential considerably; however, if I had started keeping a tally the first couple months, I'd be at parity with everyone else due to the unknowns (ex. Montreal, Dallas' & Chivas' early success, the Fire's lack of, etc.)

  • Am I correct to assume that the black one was the worst of all 4? I think the voting system was completely rigged to an artists getting all his friends and family to vote many many time. Sorry, this is the last time fans will get to vote because of poor poor jersey sales. Please don't leave it up to us anymore if you are going to let one person vote 10 times a day. Really, "one" determined person could win this all by himself.

  • In reply to waamsy:

I thought the black one was fourth best of the five. I had the skyline design fifth. It was different but it looked like a bootleg jersey IMO.

If they were determined to pick a black one as a finalist, there was a "fireman" design that was much more creative than the eventual winner.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

    The "fireman" one was mine...

  • I am with Jeff. I saw the rules, voted once for the jersey I really liked, and then I was done. I figured, I had my say, I'll buy one if I like it, but if not they don't get my money.

How can you let people vote that many times in a day over that long a period? You're just asking for stuffed ballot boxes.

  • In reply to Modibo:

  • On a separate note, does anyone have any idea how many season ticket holders there were this year? Back when RSL entered the league, expansion teams had to have a guaranteed 6000 STH to get a team. I choked when I saw that because I think the Fire had less than a third of that. I know it has improved since, but I remembered it when I got an email today that said that Indy Eleven already has more than 6000 STH deposits for its inaugural season.

  • In reply to Fuegofan:

STH count is somewhere in the 6K range from what I understand.

  • In reply to Fuegofan:

I think it's safe to say they're going to hit their 7,000 goal. I just saw that email myself. (That inaugural home opener is going to be electric.)

  • One fan, one vote. While the winning jersey is butt ugly, it is a fitting climax for the Fire's 2013 season which has been pretty much butt ugly. While the poor start may cause the Fire a playoff spot,
there have been many games in the second half of the season where the team could have made a statement but failed to do so.
I've received numerous calls from the Fire about renewing for next season, but so far I haven't decided. It isn't dependent on making the playoffs or not, but based more on the consistent mediocre play throughout the season.
