Third kit design contest announced

Municipally themed third kit you say?

With MLS rolling out a new program which institutes third kit designs for each club, it was a just a matter of time before the Fire announced plans for their alternate uniforms in 2014. Supporters have been clamoring for a City of Chicago Flag themed kit for several seasons and this program will hopefully allow that to become a reality. The club is accepting submissions for designs as part of a contest that will narrow down the 5 best ideas as chosen by the Fire and Quaker Oats. Those five finalists will then work with the club to place the designs into "an Adidas approved template" which will then be voted on by fans in order to determine the winner.

There are of course some rules and limitations such as the Adidas template and placement of the Quaker logo front and center which rules out a repeat of the 2005 design that is so popular among supporters but it does encourage fan participation in resolving a hot button issue of the last few years.

Now you'll just have to trust that the five final designs chosen for voter consideration will include that flag jersey that seems to be the overwhelming favorite when it comes to third kit discussion.

Bust the crayons out and get busy!

  • Finally. I still wanna see something like the flag themed kit.

  • I wouldnt mind seeing a black kit. I love the way an all black kit looks.

  • Good to see them finally follow through on the promise of earlier this year (and props for it not getting swept under the carpet), but the residency requirement marginalizes not only Indiana/Wisconsin residents, but Chicago Fire fans across the country and abroad, which is silly.

    And Michigan residents!

  • In reply to JD Whiting:

They really should find a way to include all season ticket holders regardless of location.

  • I think we should bring back the Morelia third-jersey. I'm drawing it up as we speak...

  • In reply to c0quito18:

I owned that jersey until about 3 months ago, when I traded it for a retro Bayern Munich kit. (Thank you Adam)

  • Sean Johnson earns a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Costa Rica in the Gold Cup. Big save in the 82nd minute led directly to the attack that resulted in Brek Shea's game winner.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

Does anyone know why Sean got the start over Rimando? I saw a quote before the game from Klinsmann saying he was starting his "best squad."Surprised to see Sean play given that Rimando played the first two.

Costa Rica doesn't have much going forward, but Sean looked good.

  • In reply to Roti2000:

I think Klinsmann probably wanted to get a look in a match and this last group game was a good opportunity for it. Rimando will probably be back as the starter once the knock-outs start.

  • Guys. The way the fire are playing forget the third kit they should be playing in jock straps and perhaps black socks until they at least beat one upper level team. . Where is the mid season signing that we all have been waiting for. Please tell me it is not Francis?

  • In reply to brokerjohn:

There's a mid season signing on the way but don't set your hopes too high on that player being a big impact guy or a name anyone would recognize.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

I think we've all been pretty well conditioned at this point. Small mkt mindset, too bad for all us fans who've been hoping for more for years.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

I don't have my hopes set for anyone that can make a difference. I'm going to guess he'll be an unknown that has had a couple good years but it was like 4-5 years ago and hasn't really played this year so we'll be told his fitness needs to get back. He will make somewhere between 500K-1Million and next year this time we will be complaining he should be better based on his salary. Why spend any amount of money on a player unless he is capable of making a difference now?

  • Small minds produce minimal results, why bother getting anyone who won't have any impact, what a dumb idea? Save the money and try to get someone decent next season. Fire fans are tired of the team getting has been players who never really produce.
Despite the Magee/Duka trade, the F.O. continually tries to find these bargin basement players who end up producing bargin basement results. For every decent transaction they make 2 poor ones.
It's time for a major overhaul at the top echelons of the organization.

  • The Fire have revised the rules for the third jersey contest to allow entries from any zip code within 75 miles of Bridgeview. It's no longer restricted to Illinois residents. Good move but they apparently are restricted to 75 mile territorial rules out of their control.
