Fire add local midfielder King

The Fire added some depth to what is probably their thinnest position today by signing PDL alum Brendan King to the roster. The 22 year old outside midfielder was a second round Superdraft selection of the Portland Timbers in 2012 but played abroad last season. He made seven appearances for Norwegian Division One side Alta IF and played in one match for Bray Wanderers AFC in Ireland. Scouting reports describe the Notre Dame standout and Naperville native as a speedy right footed player who prefers to play on the left but can be utilized on either side.

Here's some background info on how King was acquired. King will join the club for phase 2 of training camp in California next week.

  • Nice to see them pick up a kid for the future. Undoubtedly lacks the skills to come in as a starter, but maybe another good MF addition to watch grow along with Pineda and to a lesser degree, Gulley.

  • In reply to Jeff Krause:

Odd situation with Gulley at moment as he's not with the team right now while they pursue a loan situation for him.

  • True. Hopefully his loan to wherever he ends up will do him some good and help him step up into some potential for the club in the future.

  • According to SBI the Oduro for Duka deal is done.

    No confirmation yet.

  • Looks like Rich Balchan has been cut. He's looking for another team per his twitter account.

Pause and Anibaba at right back anyone?

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

Sorry to Balchan go, I thought with his experience and PDL connection and the need for RB depth that he had a good chance. Maybe the Fire would rather sign a young guy to a smaller salary and off-cap roster spot? I suppose Kinney should be able to play RB, too.

  • Confirmed. Fire get Duka, Cbus gets Oduro.

Agreed on Balchan. I thought he showed well in both preseason matches. Too much depth at RB, especially if Pause ends up there.
