Fire add Santos via draft

The Fire used the 11th pick in the Re-Entry Draft to make forward Maicon Santos the only player selected on the day.  TheBrazilian scored 7 goals in 26 games for DC United last season but most of those came during a torrid early season run.  Santos has bounced around a bit since coming to MLS in 2009.  He played for Chivas USA, Toronto FC, and FC Dallas before joining United last year.

According to the latest Player's Union release, Santos made $113,833.33 guaranteed last season with DC.  He probably figures to gain spot minutes as a reserve with Guilermo Franco likely gone.  He will also find minutes hard to come by unless the Fire find away to move Dominic Oduro this offseason.

Unsurprisingly, defender Dan Gargan was added to the list of available players this afternoon before the draft took place.  Gargan, Corben Bone, and Jay Nolly all remain on the list of players available to all clubs in Phase 2 of the draft next Friday.

  • so is oduro going to be sticking around? or is rolfe now the full time CAM?

  • In reply to penapirata:

This move would seem to indicate another is brewing. Rolfe isn't a cam.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

we will have to wait and see.

  • Is Kellen Gulley at all close to seeing any first-team minutes?

  • In reply to Ufficio:

    No

We added squad quality, but not first team quality in my eyes. If he can replicate 7 goals this year for us in all competitions, I will be mucho gusto.

  • In reply to waam:

    Totally agree with that.

  • Why was the Dan Gargan move unsurprising? He played a bunch of minutes last year and right now if any of the back 4 are hurt he would be the guy who would be brought in for cover (he'd play RB if Anibaba got hurt, or LB if Segares got hurt, or if either CB got hurt, Anibaba would slide over and Gargan would play RB).

He's not taking up an international slot, he works his butt off, and he doesn't make much money. Do they think Kinney is going to be in full swing next year and considerably better than Gargan? I just don't understand this move at all.

  • In reply to snkscore:

good questions. i'm in agreement with you here, and at 88k i don't think he's too expensive for a really solid depth player...who is good enough to start for many clubs (and arguably for ours).

  • In reply to Drew:

Maybe it's more of an indication of Steven Kinney's health coming back and their belief in Hunter Jumper's progress. Either could fill in on the outside with Jalil moving to CB. Didn't Cuauhtemoc Blanco once say the Fire carried too many defenders?

  • In reply to c0quito18:

Maybe they believe Jumper can take the next step or maybe they've got another right back in their sights. Kinney is on the bubble because of injury issues.

    Blanco was certainly entertaining....

    In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

Blanco - one of my favorite Fire of all time, and not because he's a mega star. But because he put in a ton of effort while he was here, he just didn't sit around and collect a paycheck... He was our best chance at winning for a long time. Love the man.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

Or maybe one, Carlos Manuel Bocanegra, is planning on coming home and they're hoping Hunter Jumper can make the leap to viable option in the mean-time (pun intended). Then shortly after signing Bocanegra the Fire will acquire Didier Drogba and GR will be eating a scarf. It'll be glorious! #pipedream #cf97withdrawls

  • In reply to c0quito18:

That is one helluva pipe dream.

  • In reply to snkscore:

Let me clarify that comment. I thought it was not surprising because I mentioned his time with the Fire appeared to be over a few days ago. Gargan is a very serviceable MLS right back in my opinion and is an asset for all the reasons you mentioned.

I don't think you can rely on Kinney at this point given his injury history. Gargan simply fell out of favor for some reason.

In every snippet of video or interview we got of Dan he seemed to be jelling with the team well, becoming a leader in the club house. Have things changed that quickly?

  • In reply to waam:

He seemed to fall out of favor for some reason and it appears they just rate Anibaba much higher at right back.

  • According to the stock watch on mlssoccer.com, Ian Christansen is draft eligible and not a Fire Homegrown Player. Has the front office said anything about this?

  • In reply to DDT5583:

    Haven't heard a word, but I'll ask when I get a chance.

  • Sporting KC acquires Benny Feilhaber from New England for allocation money and two draft picks.

  • Just wanted to say congratulations to Guillermo and the Mrs. on their new addition to the family!

I would say it deserves it's own post but some how I feel it would totally turn into an Andrew Hauptman hatefest on the comment section! :) Hope mom and the baby are doing well!

  • In reply to c0quito18:

Thanks Coquito! Mom and baby are doing just fine.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

Pretty good breakdown of 2012 season.

  • gargan selected by sj...

  • GR first congrats!!!! Start saving for college now.
Can you explain why the Fire didn't try to sign Benny Feilhieber?

  • In reply to Krasov:

    Thanks Krasov.

I think they'd rather use their available budget space in other places. Feilhaber is expensive and quite honestly his form hasn't been all that great in the last few years. They've also got two center mids in Pause/Pardo that they appear to be committed to in 2013. Getting Feilhaber would have limited what they could do at other positions. They don't seem to have a ton of cap space available from what I can tell.
