Fire add World Cup vet Franco

The Fire made it official today with the announcement that the club has signed former Mexican National Team forward Guillermo Franco.  With the MLS roster freeze deadline approaching at midnight tonight the Fire probably needed to add some depth at the forward spot with only four strikers on the roster including homegrown player Kellen Gulley.  Sherjill MacDonald, Chris Rolfe, and Dominic Oduro are the others.

Franco, who participated in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups becomes the 4th Fire player on the roster with experience on the world's biggest stage.  Pavel Pardo, Arne Friedrich, and Alvaro Fernandez have also represented their countries in World Cup competition.  It's not likely that Franco supplants Sherjill MacDonald as the starter up top but it doesn't hurt to have another veteran available on the bench as the club pushes toward the playoffs.  Franco will likely make his debut in a reserve match against FC Dallas Tuesday morning at the Toyota Park practice field.

  • He scored a whopping 0 goals at Pachuca last year. If he was ineffective there I don't see him being effective here.
Any truth to the rumour that the Fire are bringing in Borghetti, Zague, and Hugo Chavez for trials?

Still a low risk signing. I don't see a whole lot of negatives to it. He's here as a bench player and he's not making much in terms of salary. They've got open roster spots and it's not like there are tons of options out there at this time.

Franco is Not the Proven Goal Scorer I was hoping for.
MackDonald thus far in my eyes has missed those Sure
Goals as Orduro has. Maybe both should consider trying
out New Boots so their Accuracy at Shots on Goal improve. LOL

  • And of course I meant Hugo Sanchez not Chavez.

  • It's not a high risk move, however until he gets a chance to prove himself on the pitch I have the following opinion: Guille Rivera > Guille Franco. I mean what would I do during the work day if not for GR?

I hope your boss isn't reading.....

Filling in roster spots is fine I guess. They strategically waited to announce this deal AFTER we beat Toronto. LOL. J/K.

  • Considering it's a deal through the end of this season at this point, with only 3 active forwards and a low cost, in addition to Franco knowing he's not going to be a starter, I don't see how this is a negative move. Like GR said, not many options out there, and the Fire *did* go after Tracy in the lottery yesterday, to no avail. Not saying this was option #2, but they were pursuing multiple options at forward this week.

  • Seattle has traded a conditional draft pick to TFC in exchange for the top allocation spot.

Witt that allocation they have acquired goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann.

  • KC - Houston tie is a good result for us. Getting the full 3 against Montreal at home is crucial, though, as we have a tough run coming up.
