Robayo to Millonarios - finally

The Fire's South American exodus continued today as Rafael Robayo finally got his wish and returned to his former club Millonarios.  The deal is a technically a loan but more importantly the transaction frees up another international roster spot.  The club is currently looking at 22 year old Dutch midfielder Gianluca Nijholt.  The player's agent claims that both sides are interested and he is attempting to work through contract numbers with the Fire.  Nijholt can apparently be had on a free transfer.

  • On Robayo leaving = GOOD! I have seen him play uninspired a few too many times for my liking.

On new guy= I understand highlight videos can be misleading but man he sure looks better then any of the guys we have brought in recently. Hard tackles, good passer, great left foot, and good service from dead balls. Him being only 22, seems like a good replacement for Pappa next year.

  • In reply to KChance:

Is this Gianluca Nijholt player an outside mid, defending mid or attacking mid? His father Luc, was a defender and midfield.

  • In reply to longoria3:

He appears to be a central midfielder.

  • Better news than just a few days ago. Wondering if Nijholt will be a CAM (which is what he appears to be in YouTube video clips), or a pre-emptive replacement for Pappa. Seems to have a decent left foot, and a good first touch.

  • awesome news, now all we need is to sign kaka and then watch a grown man eat a scarf(fingers crossed).

  • In reply to penapirata:

I'm pretty sure my diet will remain scarf free.

  • Now all the have to do is get Nijholt signed by tomorrow. No pressure...

  • Or Michael Owen.

  • In reply to Jeff Krause:

That would be like rushing into Hallmark five minutes before the store closes on Valentine's day to buy the girlfriend/wife a dozen roses only to find that one or two damaged dozens are left on the shelf. Of course you buy them because they're discounted.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

    Best. analogy. ever.

    In reply to Jeff Krause:

Atleast they went in for roses.

  • In reply to Jeff Krause:

Great analogy. I have been there. I just made one good dozen
roses out of the two bad ones. Looks like that is what the fire are doing by sending off Puppo and Robayo and hopefully to complete the good Bunch by being able to have Grazzini come back and adding Nijholt five minutes before the store closes.

Lets see how far we can stretch this analogy lol.

  • so any news to report on the craziest holiday of them all, deadline day.

  • If Nijholt can be had on a free transfer, would that transfer have to come in within the transfer deadline? I can never keep those rules straight, but I recall that transfers can sometimes be completed outside the standard windows.

  • In reply to Modibo:

If the player is out of contract by the time the transfer window closes he can still be added to the roster after July 27. The MLS roster freeze deadlines is September 15 and new players can't be added after that.

  • Man, all likelihood of the transfer happening aside, how awesome would it be to see Guillermo eat a scarf? I'm assuming it would have to be Maxwell Street-style but it would have to be packed in Quaker packaging.

  • In reply to c0quito18:

    No ketchup of course.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

Guillermo, don't forget I gladly volunteered to share some of that gourmet scarf meal :-D.

  • In reply to FireRog:

I know....I don't think our digestive systems are in any danger though.

  • In reply to c0quito18:

There would have to be ground rules, like, how long would he have to scarf the whole thing down (ha ha)? Could he cut it up? Cook it into some other kind of food?

I like this kind of speculation better than puzzling over the FO moves. I think I'm going to come up with some proposed guidelines. They'll all be wasted of course but what the heck.

  • In reply to Modibo:

I wonder if Malort goes with scarf?

  • Seattle signs a new German DP:

    http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2012/07/tiffert-sounders-dp.html

He's got international U-21 experience but hasn't seemed to get time with the senior squad. Now Seattle has to move another DP or downgrade one somehow. But at least they're out there looking for proven talent.

  • In reply to Modibo:

I don't think anyone knows much about Christian Tiffert but he did start 31 games last year for a Bundesliga side.

I would assume the rumored Alvaro Fernandez loan move will happen to make room.

  • Fire news coming shortly. Stay tuned.
