Alvaro Fernandez to the Fire

It's been a busy week for the Fire.

With the MLS transfer window closing today the club has announced the acquisition of midfielder Alvaro Fernandez from Seattle Sounders FC in exchange for allocation money.  Recent talks of a loan move to Deportivo Cali apparently fell through and Seattle's addition of Christian Tiffert made it necessary to move of one three DP's on the club.

Fernandez scored 13 goals in 55 appearances for Seattle since joining MLS in 2010.  He gives the Fire a different option on the wing but he has been a bit up and down over his tenure with the Sounders.

  • Meh...

Wait, I take that back, we have an international spot still open? Maybe Guille eats this scarf after all...

But he's a DP for the Fire, correct? Maybe you can put him on the wing and have Potato in the creative spot? I wouldn't mind that either. After analyzing, I think this might be good...

  • In reply to c0quito18:

Yes, he is the Fire's second DP.....and I'm pretty still pretty sure I won't be having scarf for dinner. ;)

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

there's still hope madrid and kaka come to an agreement to terminate his contract which would open the door for a scarfing of a scarf.(fingers crossed)

  • In reply to penapirata:

What do we need another kaka for, the problem is we have to much kaka already, especially in the F.O. and at times on the field.

  • In reply to penapirata:

No there's not. Our window is closed, so even if they did cancel his contract we couldn't sign him until January. The European window is still open, so he could go to AC Milan.

  • In reply to iron81:

    No scarf for me.

  • In reply to iron81:

If he became a free agent he could sign with us up until September. That's why I said if Madrid terminates his contract.

  • It should also be noted that Fernandez received his green card in March and does not occupy an international roster spot. The Fire still have one open.

  • Yes, I like it. A player with class albeit not a position of real need. Time to sweeten Grazzini's deal and overcome his "personal problems." Now if McDonald is decent we may have a shot at something other than 5th in the East.

  • under rated part of his game is he is good at getting on the end of set pieces. He uses his length well. Hopefully this allows Rolfe to move forward

  • In reply to lijien:

That's a very good point. At 6'-1" he's one of the tallest players on the club.

  • i don't know what to make of this. on one hand he has shown he can be a very effective winger andtrack back to help on defense unlike *cough pappa cough*. i'll be interested to see how he is used. still no target forward that can finish consistently though.

  • In reply to penapirata:

The more I look at this deal the better it looks, but you're right...there are still questions up top.

  • so did frank call him a goal scorer like he did macdonald? since 2009 fernandez has scored 18 goals while macdonald has only scored 15. goal scorer with a proven record huh?

  • We seem to have a revolving door of uruguayos. Not that I'm complaining, just observing. Puerari, Cháves, Puppo, now Fernandez. Fourth time is the charm?

  • My reactions, as they came randomly to me:

    Well I'll be a f****d monkey!

DP sloppy seconds from Seattle again.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the Fire's response to Pappa's imminent departure.

  • His 2011-2012 stats: 47 games zero goals at Colon. It must be the first name.

  • In reply to longoria3:

update: 47 games 9 goals. Still not impressive.

  • According to twitter, Columbus Crew signed Higuain as a DP......that is Frederico (older brother of Gonzalo).

  • Columbus has signed Argentine striker Federico Higuain as a DP. He is the older brother of Gonzalo Higuain.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

Despite his last name, Fernandez is rated as more valuable
by transfermarket, apparently not as skilled as his younger brother.

  • Guillermo Any News or Updates on the Dutch Sensation Nijaholt
that is training with the Fire and if signed will help us push for the
    MSL Cup this year?

  • In reply to Juergen:

Nothing new on him yet. Klopas said this afternoon that they would still look at players who were out of contract after today. He apparently has a year left on his deal so it's not clear what his status would be.

  • 1st- Wash the Sounder scum off of him.
2nd- He can play, there is no doubt about that. However, the diving and weak flopping he kept pulling off in Seattle ends right now.
3rd- Wear our badge with pride and we will support you. We already know the hard work and effort you put into the game.

  • Why wouldn't the Fire try Fernandez as a striker. The guy has a great shot and typically gets it on frame. I would go to a 4-4-2 with Fernandez up top with Rolfe. Leave Pause or Pardo on the bench until Pappa gets tired then bring on one of those guys. Oduro can sit on the bench and think about all of the shots he blasted into the seats instead of the back of the net. I like this signing very much. This guy is the real deal.

  • I know it's been tried before with little success but I wouldn't be opposed to seeing Fernandez and Nyarko outside with Pappa in the Grazzini role and Rolfe pushed up further.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

I'm reasonably certain Ferdandez will play as CAM. Some Sounders fans were saying he played that position a lot before going to Seattle.

  • In reply to iron81:

More on that in the match preview.

  • So we are taking seattles sloppy DP seconds again?
It means we are getting so someone Seattle didn't want because they are upgrading. Why can't we upgrade and dump are DPs because the third largest city had no real DPs while tiny Seattle had 3

  • In reply to MikeRUZE:

I read that Fernandez wasn't getting along with management. If he gels well with our guys it might turn out he is a great pickup for us. Plus we got him for only allocation money. Not a bad move as far as I can tell. Low risk for possible high reward.

  • In reply to MikeRUZE:

We can't upgrade because we have insincere ownership. I have to give Frank Klopas a lot of credit for what he's been able to do with the personnel provided. I have to wonder how long he'll remain with the Fire though if they continue to play the smoke & mirrors game, simply moving players in and out, with the focus on economics and giving the fans just enough taste of talent to think there's a chance.

Better. Are the Fire flirting with us again?
