MLS 2012 player salaries

The MLS Player's Union has released the list of 2012 player salaries.  The Fire's complete list is shown below.  Needless to say there are some bargains on the books again this year.  Pavel Pardo and Arne Friedrich are the highest paid players in terms of guaranteed 2012 compensation with Patrick Nyarko and Gonzalo Segares not far behind.

Also note that Chris Rolfe is getting paid tonight.  Sorry couldn't resist.

I'll have more on salary cap/budget implications later.

  • I don't totally get the different between the salary and then the guaranteed? I would think the guaranteed would be less than the salary with the right to cut ties with the player but then pay the guarantee? Can anyone explain?

    Most overpaid - 1. Bone 2. Dube 3. Puppo
    Most underpaid - 1. Grazzini 2. Berry 3. Tornaghi

  • In reply to Drew:

The guaranteed salary is closer to the number that is used against the cap/budget. It includes bonuses that are prorated over the course of a contract. The number you see for Grazzini only reflects what is paid through the league. It does not reflect other possible payments from the team through allocation and other avenues that could possibly count against the budget number. For example Mauro Rosales is only listed at $200k but he counts against the Seattle budget as a DP. The numbers you see here may not necessarily show what a certain player is actually making in some cases.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

Ok, makes some sense but then these numbers are somewhat useless at face value. Doesn't surprise me though - MLS seems to make everything confusing. Looking forward to your analysis and commentary on these salaries.
