Monday Misc Notes

Conde Trade Soon?

Tim Ream's clearance for a work permit allowing his transfer to Bolton could signal another move from the Fire.  The New York Red Bulls will receive a sizable allocation for Ream and it is believed that NY will use some of that money to acquire the rights to Wilman Conde from the Fire.  Rumors have circulated since last week that the deal was done and the announcement was being held off until Ream's permit cleared.

A six figure allocation for a player that's reportedly lost a step after suffering foot injuries in Mexico would be an excellent move for the Fire.

Cuesta Still Not In Camp

With an abundance of center backs in camp the Fire may be poised to move another familiar name.  Yamith Cuesta has yet to report to camp and Frank Klopas told's Sam Stejskal last week that the club was "trying to work things out" with the player.  Klopas would not elaborate further but with Jalil Anibaba, Cory Gibbs, Josip Mikulic, Kwame Watson-Siriboe, Austin Berry, and Justin Chavez all capable of playing in the middle it would seem that Cuesta's days in Fire red could be numbered.

Cuesta currently occupies an international roster spot.

Fire Add To Technical Staff

I wasn't able to make it downtown for the official jersey unveiling last Thursday but Fire owner Andrew Hauptman revealed that the club has hired Guillermo Petrei to work with Frank Klopas, Javier Leon, and Mike Jeffries.  Petrei will not be the new "technical director" and will instead work under Klopas and Leon.  Klopas will continue to have final say on player/field related matters.  HTIOT fills in some of the blanks here.

Wilt and Marsch Talk MLS

Check out the first episode of's podcast featuring former Fire general manager Peter Wilt and former Fire midfielder/Montreal Impact head coach Jesse Marsch discussing MLS.

  • Agudelo?

  • In reply to Doug:

Interesting thought but NYRB supposedly has interest in him from overseas which could net them even more allocation cash.

  • no not banner. what will we do without him? ;)

  • Even though I've been a critic of Banner, I wish him well, at one time I thought he might make a meaningful contribution to the club.
After several years of injuries like he had and with the influx of newer
and younger talent, it's not surprising he is being released.
Hopefully he can continue in soccer in some manner.
    Best of luck.

  • On Extra Time Radio it sounded like McBride talked to the Fire about a coaching position but was turned down. How do they not include Brown or McBride when it seems both would like to be here (I'm assuming on Brown)?

  • In reply to colton:

De Los Cobos was still the coach when Brown retired and it seemed there may been philosophical differences so pairing the two was probably not a good idea at that point.

I get the feeling the organization was expecting McBride to take more of a leadership role within the squad during his last season here and he really didn't do that.

  • Definitely doubtful about Cuesta, especially since it has been reported that he won't be back (didn't you post this at one point, Guillermo?).

Tanto Yamith Cuesta (defensa colombiano) y Diego Cháves (delantero uruguayo) no van más en el cuadro rojo. From

  • In reply to Fuegofan:

All speculation...I don't think I ever said he definitely wouldn't be back.

  • #CJRoF2012

  • If Cuesta doesn't come back I think that that is a mistake on the Fire's part. Sure he made a few mistakes last year, but there is no doubt the kid has a huge upside and works harder than just about anyone out there. He cares about the team and never gives up. He shut down Lenhart which is not an easy thing to do. I think the Fire relying solely on Corey Gibbs in the backline for leadership could be costly because he could get hurt. With Pavel Pardo as a holding mid, the team will be better no matter what, but Cuesta is a great option if Corey gets hurt or if Janil Anibab needs to play left back.

  • Seems the Fire have finally signed Kheli Dube (per his twitter account).

  • The is good news. Kehli Dube is a big forward who can play up top as a ball control big man. This is a good signing as far as I'm concerned. This team is really starting to come together. They are going to have too many top players for spots on the field. That's not a bad problem, but a tough one to handle for a coach.

  • In reply to Krasov:

did i miss something? when did dube become a big forward who can control the ball? i thought he was a speedy wingman ala nyarko?

  • In reply to penapirata:

    dube- 6'1" oduro- 6'0" nyarko- 6'0" barrouch- 6'2" puppo- 5'10"

  • In reply to penapirata:

Did Puppo "Grow Two Inches since being signed by the Fire??"
He was listed as being 5' 8" "Maybe all those streching exercises
    the Fire does made him

  • Good Lord, if we are getting excited about the signing of Dube, the Fire are in real trouble. With the options that the Fire have at that position, I think that Dube will have a hard time making this roster. And I think that this is a very good thing.

  • In reply to ggorecki:

Dube's a decent fill in player although I wouldn't exactly describe him as a target guy despite being 6'-1"....he can also play right mid.

  • Dube stinks. I've seen enough of him to know that he cannot possibly help the Fire win any trophies. I don't know, do they give a trophy for winning the Reserve League? With his skill set, that's about where he belongs.

  • In reply to StaryByk3:

I'm pretty sure people said the same thing about Oduro. Just sayin'.

  • In reply to Jeff Krause:

Right, some people might not have rated Oduro highly. But I would attribute that to his inconsistency. Dube's problem is that he is not a good player. Hard to recover from that.

This season will be the one for Oduro to prove that his 2010 performance was not a fluke.

  • Here's the official announcement on Dube......

Apparently he's shrunk a few inches since his MLS profile was posted. The Fire list him at 5'-11".

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

Dube probably gave two inches to Puppo who was listed at 5' 8" and
    grew to 5' 10"

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

I also would like to know what is in the works as far as
Television and Radio coverage of the 2012 season.
Since we now have a sponsor in Quaker a Chicago
based company I am hoping we get more attention
from the Media. Since Jeff Crandell and Brandan
Hannan are in Florida with the Team I am hoping
we will can look forward to streaming preseason games.

  • any word on tv or radio? or even streaming of preseason games?

  • In reply to penapirata:

No official word yet but I'm assuming the tv partners will be the same as last season. I believe the Carolina Cup matches will be streamed but not sure about the rest of the schedule. I'll ask.

    Radio? What is radio? ;)

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

I say we hop on this "webio" thing. I'm sure they're looking for programming, right?

  • In reply to c0quito18:

In all seriousness, I'd like to see them really take a look at the two FM news stations in town. The AM dial is pretty crowded during the summer and there seems to be little interest from the two main sports talkers.

  • Anyone watch the US vs Panama game? It was good seeingSean in goal in the secong half. If this guy keeps performing it will be hard Fire to keep him around. If he gets his chance during the Olympics and goes good one would think some offers going to come around?

  • In reply to Adam25:

I long as Klinsmann continues to prefer Hamid it might keep him around a little longer.....but yeah, it may be just a matter of time before he gets draws some interest from across the pond if he continues to progress.

  • In reply to Guillermo Rivera:

Guillermo do you have access to Brandan Hannan and Jeff Crandell down in Florida ??
Hopefully they can be encouraged to provide us Die Hard Fire Fans with daily updates from whats happening down there.
Is Puppo at training camp?? He is the only one not pictured in the New Fire Quaker Kit??

  • In reply to Juergen:

Both of those guys do provide daily updates via the team's Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Puppo is indeed in camp and Robayo is expected to arrive shortly.

  • Just got off Klopas conference call. Klopas says Mikulic is not with the team due to family issues and it did not sound like he was likely to return. The club is still trying to work out a deal for Cuesta who is apparently on loan to MLS.

    More coming shortly!
