Fire Reserves Down RSL

The Fire improved their record in the MLS Reserve League to 5-1-1 with a 2-0 victory over Real Salt Lake at the Toyota Park practice field this morning.  Cristian Nazirit scored a Reserve League leading 5th goal and Diego Chaves added the second score from the penalty spot.

The Fire initially had Corben Bone in the starting eleven but he was scratched just before kick off with a right knee contusion.  Mike Banner started the match at left back but was lifted at half time after a collision with a Real Salt Lake player.  With Gonzalo Segares unavailable this coming weekend due to yellow card accumulation Banner seemed to be the likely replacement at left back in San Jose so his fitness will be something to keep an eye on in the next few days.  Pari Pantazopoulos, who started today's match in midfield in place of Bone would be the next likely choice if Banner can't go.

Fire Line-Up

GK Conway (Dufty 46')

D Pineda, Mikulic, Cuesta, Banner (Segares 46')

M Videira, Paladini, Husidic (Jeffries 46'), Pantazopoulos

F Chaves, Nazirit (Gulley 64')

The Jeffries on today's reserve league roster is the son of Fire Director of Player Personnel Mike Jeffries.  The younger Jeffries is a member of the Chicago Fire Juniors and part of the US U-17 player pool.

CJ Brown coached the RSL Reserves in his second trip back to Chicago this season.

  • Its a good thing the reserve league is back giving a chance for players to play without being in the starting 11...

Bobby Rhine, FC Dallas broadcaster died today. Before Evan Whitfield was hired, Chicago Fire vs FC Dallas opener, I believe him and Dan Kelly shared play-by-play duties during that game.

Pretty sad news....great guy by all accounts.

You're right...that first game in Dallas was a shared feed that included Rhine in the booth with Dan Kelly.

  • No Ferrari on the bench?

I guess I'm disappointed that Segares came on at LB instead of Pari. That tells me that they've dropped the idea of Pari playing LB and want him to learn LM (where we are kind of thin). I expect our defense to look like: Anibaba, Mikulic, Gibbs, Gargan.

This went largely unnoticed since there was no game this weekend but Ferrari won't be playing again this season. He is out with a left knee ACL tear suffered in the last reserve match on August 28.

Yikes. Unfortunately, he might not play much next season as well. Man, though break. Err, I mean, tear. Dang it, I was looking forward to him breaking out as well.
