Fire v Manchester United Match Day Is Here

What is expected to be the largest crowd ever for a Fire game should be in attendance to watch the home side take on Premiere League Champions Manchester United at Soldier Field today at 4:00 CDT.  The previous record of 54,432 was set at Soldier Field on July 16, 2005 as the Fire drew with Columbus 1-1 but that game was part of an international doubleheader with Real Madrid v Chivas Guadalajara as the night cap.

Manchester United has spent the better part of the last two nights since arriving in town on Thursday afternoon travelling from appearance to appearance before a light training session at Toyota Park last night.  After walloping Seattle on Wednesday night 7-0 and facing the Fire today the Red Devils will travel to New Jersey to prepare for the MLS All Star game on Wednesday night.  The Fire's best chance in this one may rest on some tired legs from a team just beginning their pre-season training.  I had chance to look at the game with Manchester United fan site "Republik of Mancunia".

Here's United's game day roster:

1 David De Gea GK

3 Patrice Evra DF

4 Phil Jones DF

5 Rio Ferdinand DF

7 Michael Owen FW

8 Anderson MF

9 Dimitar Berbatov FW

10 Wayne Rooney FW

11 Ryan Giggs MF

21 Rafael da Silva DF

23 Jonny Evans DF

26 Gabriel Obertan MF

27 Federico Macheda FW

32 Mame Biram Diouf FW

34 Anders Lindegaard GK

35 Tom Cleverley MF

*Chicharito is listed on the game day roster but I've seen conflicting reports concerning his availability.  I'm expecting that he will join the team in New Jersey for the MLS All Star Game.

  • GR, while I am going to the game and I respect United and as a late comer to game of soccer, I have come to realize that rooting for United when you did not grow up rooting for them, is like growing up in Chicago and choosing to be a Yankee fan. They are the team I cannot stand to see succeed because they have all of the money and are always winning. My hope for today is to see Sir Alex in his post game comments complain about the referees. If we see that, we know the Fire frustrated his team. Also, it was nice to see that Barca clobbered United in the Champions League final because Sir Alex made a huge coaching blunder by not putting Berbatov in the team. GO FIRE!!!!
