Pre Match Training News and Notes

A few notes and tidbits after a conference call with Carlos De Los Cobos going into the Portland Timbers first MLS home match :

  • Although he's not listed on the inury report, Josip Mikulic remains in Chicago nursing the quad injury he sustained last week.  His status is yet unknown for the Los Angeles match on Sunday.
  • Dasan Robinson will start at center back on Thursday.  Despite the goal, DLC thinks Robinson did a decent job against O'Brian White in Seattle.
  • Bratislav Ristic has resumed full training and is with the team in Portland
  • DLC has not decided on the line up for tomorrow but he will take into consideration the timing of playing three games in eight days while possibly resting some starters.  He does intend to put the best team possible on the field however.
  • The team is wary of Kenny Cooper's size and ability in the air and marking him appropriately in the penalty area has been stressed to the team.
  • The team will train at Jeld Wen Field this afternoon.

wow, alot of players coming from south america.

  • In reply to firefan1998:

I've always thought South America would be a gold mine for good MLS players at reasonable wages.

  • In reply to cesba:

Colombians in particular have been good value and now Uraguay is two for two. Seattle may have one but a relatively untapped market.Perhaps the Fire should tap into Uraguay again for future or present needs.

  • In reply to cesba:

David Beckham picked up his 5th yellow card of the season in stoppage time of the first half in Toronto. Beckham will now miss the Fire game on Sunday.

  • In reply to cesba:

and juninho got sent off in injury time so he will also miss sundays match

  • In reply to CountChocula:

I was going to make Sunday my first game this season, now I'm just not sure...

  • In reply to cesba:

this is somewhat interesting, even tho its very early in the season..

regular season team scoring so far

LA galaxy, 6 games, 5 goals

    NYRB 4 games, 2 goals

    Chicago fire - 3 games, 5 goals

  • In reply to CountChocula:

Interesting indeed although I have to believe New York will be able to score goals at some point.

  • In reply to CountChocula:

espindola saves my fantasy week by scoring in injury time

  • In reply to cesba:

i've always thought that eastern europe would be that gold mine.

  • In reply to firefan1998:

There's gold in them hills too.

  • In reply to firefan1998:

The lights of Western Europe shine brighter if you are in Eastern Europe... There's something to be said for proximity and cultural ties.

  • In reply to firefan1998:

The loss of Juninho is more problematic for the Galaxy than the loss of Beckham. Last year, the Galaxy played better without Beckham than with him. Without Beckham, they are a faster team and don't have a defensive hole. I'd rather have Beckham play. He only adds danger on free kicks and sometimes open play crosses. Defensively, he has turned into a liablility and a hack. 5 yellow cards in 5 games is just plain dumb. I hope the Fire squeeze Landycakes. I hope Mikulic will be back in time to knock Donovan on his backside. I have to give Donovan credit though. I did not realize that he is fluent in German and Spanish. He can play and communicate with just about anyone.

  • In reply to SoccerNewbie:

LA's midifield is awfully toothless without Donovan...even with Beckham playing.

  • In reply to firefan1998:

i wonder if golden balls will be fined for criticizing the refs? probably not since garber is in his back pocket.

  • In reply to firefan1998:

I would think Posh will have less money to spend on clothes but I'm sure neither one will miss the paltry fine that is surely coming his way.
