Manchester United in Chicago?

According to this report Mancheser United will return to Chicago this summer for more than just a work out and some photo ops.  The report claims that the Red Devils will play the Fire on July 23.  The game was originally planned for Wrigley Field but that has apparently fallen through.  The Cubs host the Houston Astros on July 23.

"Signed" Player Total Increases

The Fire has announced the signing of back up keeper Alec Dufty raising the total number of signed players on the roster to 22.  More announcements are expected shortly.

  • Alec Dufty.....isn't he the guy that gave up 2 goals to a college team in a pre-season....oh wait.. meh. 3rd stringer....I'll wait until he needs to cut his teeth before I scream at him.

    More announcements = decent news.

  • In reply to giaco:

In fairness, one was a pk goal

  • In reply to giaco:

I thought the broadcast team was decent. Would love to see Amy come back as well.

As far as the Alec Dufty signing is concerned, somewhere Andrew Dykstra is feeling a sharp pain from getting kicked in the junk.

  • Oh yeah, and what the hell is a Manchester United?

  • In reply to giaco:

I wouldn't mind if they left Giggs behind for a year or two.

  • In reply to cesba:

Here is the catch: Giggs is 37 years old and I don't know if he will hold up for one more year. Clerance Seedorf would be the best option but it is up to him whether he wants to come here in the United States.

  • In reply to giaco:

With Amy Freeze out at Fox , will she be back to do the sideline reporting for the Fire?
Very very strange that in the last 6 months fox has got rid of 2 women who promote soccer ( Jill Carlson and Amy Freeze ).
And WSCR got rid of Fred Huebner not long after he bacame the Fire play by play man.

  • In reply to FireStingDoug:

Amy Freeze is hosting the Annual Kick Off Luncheon in a few weeks so she's still involved in some fashion. I haven't heard anything about the broadcast teams yet though.

  • In reply to cesba:

How did you guys like Kelly and Doran last year for the broadcasts? I really liked em at the beginning, and then they started to wear on me. Maybe Kelly got a bit bored, I dunno.

  • In reply to RedLine55:

I vote yes on Kelly and Doran. I'd also like to see Amy Freeze stay on as the sideline reporter.

  • In reply to cesba:

I will take Amy Freeze or Jill Carlson as sideline reporters. As long as someone has the knowledge of the sport, I am fine with it.

Interesting interview with MLS' "technical director"......

    http://theshinguardian.com/2011/03/02/alfonso-mondelo-on-the-technical-state-of-mls/

He identifies Corben Bone and Baggio Husidic as top young talents.

  • In reply to cesba:

I'd really like to hear a coherent explanation as to why this can go down in Houston but it's not possible in Chicago......

  • In reply to cesba:

Maybe they have competent leadership who want to build/nurture their fan base? Just guessing...

  • In reply to cesba:

Has the front office learned from thier mistakes?

  • In reply to cesba:

Hopefully Posada announces his replacement tonight
since he is not capable of getting the job done of
    promoting the Chicago - Fire.
I will tell him that Chicago has a much larger Soccer
Fan Base than Houston. Look at what The Houston Dynamo
has done to promote their team.
"It's time for Posada to move over and let someone else
    take over."

  • In reply to cesba:

    Maric signed.

Is this the international "forward," or what? Maybe the bubble players will have even more competition for spots.

  • In reply to Modibo:

This is not the international forward Klopas was referring to. There apparently will be another forward and possibly another midfielder brought in.

I've got my total at 31 players in camp at the moment.

  • In reply to cesba:

Somebody should address this source to "Nada" Posada (sorry TigerJMS) on a city like Houston call strike a deal with Clear Channel to broadcast games on Spanish and English radio. Chicago is one of the biggest markets in America and treated like a smalltown city. Difference with Posada and the Fire and the Dynamo is that Houston have a guy name Leiweke that has been associated with the soccer business since the early 80's.

  • In reply to cesba:

not at t.p.,,,,,man utd want too much casholla

  • In reply to cesba:

So I guessing the Fire will not be picking up any players from today

  • In reply to Adam25:

    I'm guessing the same...probably not.

  • In reply to Adam25:

    Guillermo the truth hurts.
Julian Posada and his staff don't have the marketing skills
and media know how that other teams have.
"The Chicago Fire need New Leadership it is Very Obvious that
the current group in charge isn't getting the job done.
I am surprised since the Fire doesn't have an announced Jersey Sponsor,Television or Radio Contract yet, that Andrew Hauptman
hasn't made changes in the front office staff starting with the main guy.
    or announbced

  • In reply to TigerJMS:

Hopefully someone asks this question at the Section 8 March Board meeting tonight. Posada is supposed to field questions for 30 minutes.

  • In reply to cesba:

Someone must ask these questions tonight. There are way too many loose ends out there at present. Sad you could see 35k plus crowds to watch the Sting but they cannot fill Toyota park on a regular basis, especially with the growth of soccer that has experienced between the two. There were many more coming to the games the first few years of the team...the ostrich method is not working. The team is practically invisible in the Chicago media. Maybe they should hire an exec from the Indoor Football team, at least they would make the evening news...

  • In reply to TigerJMS:

Posada to attend S8 meeting at Abbey Pub tonight......

  • Maybe they will instead play at the legendary baseball stadium, US Cellular Field.

  • Per Sam....Klopas still looking to add another international forward. FK indicated last week that another forward was something they were looking at.

  • In reply to cesba:

How about looking at a guy name Albert Luque who is a currently a free agent? Question: Would you take a chance on Luque or shy away from him after the Collins John/Tomaz Frankowski/Paulo Wanchope experience didn't pan out (even his fellow countrymen Mista flopped in MLS)?

  • I like Doran and Kelly. I had a chance to talk to Dan Kelly last year "Meet the Fire" convention and he mentioned his passion of soccer, he admitted that the game of soccer is new to him and he said that he will get used to it as the season goes on. IMO, he did a great job coming from a hockey background.
