Fire v Manchester United at Soldier Field

It's been rumored for a while but today it's official.  The Fire will face Manchester United at Soldier Field on Saturday July 23 (7 pm kick off).  The game is part of the World Football Challenge event that MLS announced last week.  The details, schedule, and complete format of the WFC have yet to be announced but it has been rumored to include several other big European clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Manchester City along with popular teams from south of the border such as Club America.

Barcelona's participation has been confirmed.  They will take on the Red Devils at FedEx Field in Landover, MD on July 30.

The good news for Fire Season Ticket Holders is that the game will be part of the STH package as Bonus Game Number 2.  Although the game won't be at Wrigley Field as some had hoped, Soldier Field is a much better option for watching and staging a soccer match.

  • Per Sam......

Mikulic picked up a quad injury in training today. DLC unsure if he'll be able to go tom. Mentioned Robinson & Cuesta as potential fill-ins

    Any preview for USOC?

  • In reply to Adam25:

I thought about doing one but an accurate preview will be tough. The Rapids seem to be fielding a B team seeing that some of the regulars won't even travel.

    What about live chat?

  • In reply to Adam25:

I'll do more of those this season but won't be able to today.

Very excited for the Man U/ Fire Game!! I hope there is a good turn out, It can do alot for transforming Chicago soccer fans into Fire fans! Marketing and advertising the game will be crucial!

"Julian Posada and his Front Office Staff Need to take
a Crash Course In Marketing And Advertising."
What they have done so far this Season Is Not Working!!!
Maybe they can get some advise from the Seattle Group since
they are averaging 36,000 plus a game.

  • In reply to TigerJMS:

Julian Posada told a room full of Fire fans that the club's marketing efforts were working because no one in the room had seen their marketing... I'm not kidding, anyone at the Hauptman event last Friday can verify that...

They specifically don't think they have the resources to market the club in such a way as to reach the whole city as Seattle has done.

  • In reply to Byron:

He did indeed say that while referring to his attempts to reach out to markets that haven't been traditionally covered in the past....(ie outlying suburbs - he specifically referred to a wrap around ad in a Naperville paper).

  • In reply to TKing:

Just watched the KC game again on dvr (yes I know...get a life), but Nyarko probably had a little better game than I gave him credit for. Milicz might be right on that one.

Anyway....what did you guys think of the My50 broadcast and the new announcing team?

  • In reply to cesba:

    Guillermo,
My wife and I were at the Game at Toyota Park on Saturday.
I recorded the Game on my DVR from the Telefutura Broadcast,
and my Spanish is very limited so far.
Is there a way in can get My50 in the Rockford Illinois area?

  • In reply to TigerJMS:

I'd suggest the DirectKick package. It's only $79 and you get to see any game that features on a local broadcast.

  • In reply to oliotya:

Direct Kick had the KC crew broadcast but apparently not the Fire call this weekend.

  • In reply to oliotya:

Doug Thank you, I have The Direct Kick Package.
I live a few miles North East Of Rockford Illinois.
I have Dishnetwork so I get CSN ComCast Sportsnet and MLS Direct Kick and My wife, son and I attend most Fire Games at Toyota Park.
I was just wondering if there is any way to get
My50 so I can listen to their Broadcast via
    stream or otherwise?

  • In reply to TigerJMS:

I think if you get amplified digital antenna you can pull MY50 and watch in HD pre say...

  • In reply to cesba:

I hope that this time we get to wear our home uniforms and make ManUre wear their away uniforms.

  • In reply to cesba:

I watched the game on DVR too, I don't know, not much difference from last year, but that Cesar guy doesn't work for me I guess I think Amy did a better job on the side line, but we will see.

  • In reply to cesba:

Thought announcing team was good overall. Dan Kelly is a natural, and I feel like he really got in to soccer over the past year, and you can hear it in his calls. More lingo and sounds more comfortable assessing the flow of the match.

Whitfield was a surprise and seemed a bit hesitant to offer too much, but I hope the two develop a nice chemistry. About the production: I think that was a nice step up from last season, as well. Nicer graphics to start and the pregame from the pitch was nice. The camera work still baffles me sometimes, but hopefully they will fix some of that.

Oscar Guzman i actually loved listening to in spanish on the radio the past couple years, but there was something very off-putting about the sideline reporting. I don't know the whole backstory, but it seems like the questions in English were awkward and too simple. Obviously you don't want any crazy deep questions, but the ones he kept asking were odd and didn't provoke any meaningful responses. I like him, though, so I hope it gets better. (and the sound was messed up a few times, but it was cold and windy so we can blame the weather.)

Will Kustok or Amy Freeze be on the sideline for Comcast games? I have a feeling the answer is "no."

  • In reply to TKing:

I'm not sure about this. I find these preseason warmups for the Europeans pretty tiresome.

If Sir Alex played his first string squad, maybe. I'd rather see Chicharito in the Gold Cup the month before than in this match.

  • In reply to cesba:

eh, as much as i think chicago should try to win the USOC match, they also have to be prudent and mitigate injury risk - play dasan or cuesta, see how they fit in with gibbs & co. i'd probly also only play nyarko a half or less - use him as a sub if needed, otherwise rest him and let his ankle heal some more
