I'm planning on bringing back the live chat for the final pre-season match on Saturday night...in the meantime here are the starting line ups for the second match of the Carolina Challenge Cup:

Fire

Conway; Anibaba, Mikulic, Gibbs; Ristic, Husidic, Pause, Pappa, Paul; Puerari, Chaves

I'm particularly looking forward to the match up with USMNT forward Charlie Davies.

The iPad and iPhone apps are now available for download.  It's an excellent feature....especially for the price of free.

Can't today (due to responsibilities related to my actual bill paying employment), but it will be back on Saturday.

  • In reply to cesba:

i understand, leaving work @ 4:30 to catch 2nd half

  • In reply to cesba:

Excited to see Davies as well. Haven't really seen him play at all since the accident, other than the odd highlight.

  • In reply to cesba:

I assume you use the iPhone and therefore didn't mention this, but the app is also on Android, the platform that more people use then the iPhone or iPad combined.

10'- DCU takes the lead on a set piece goal by Blake Brettschneider

  • In reply to milicz:

    conway in goal

DC scores off free kick in 10th min

  • In reply to milicz:

Not much from the Fire so far....DCU holding possesion

  • In reply to milicz:

    red card chavez

    *sigh*

WTF guys these are sposed to be friendlies

  • In reply to milicz:

Chaves picks up a red card on an awful call.....yellow card worthy but no way that was red.

  • In reply to cesba:

totally agree -- the refs are red card nuts! BTW who is the jerk representing the Fire on the broadcast?

  • In reply to shortpasses:

same as last game....Andrew Bell on pbp and Jeff Crandall on color

  • In reply to cesba:

Posada should be listening to this game because if he is looking for play-by-play guys for English radio broadcast, those are the guys. Crandall and Bell are perfect for the job.

  • In reply to longoria3:

Haven't you heard? There's no advertiser interest in radio. ;)

  • In reply to cesba:

    aw shucks!!!

  • In reply to longoria3:

Is Nyarko a starter? Has this guy ever watched MLS??

  • In reply to shortpasses:

He also asked where CJ Brown was earlier.

  • In reply to longoria3:

And....Nyarko is on for Davis Paul

  • In reply to cesba:

Puerari has looked good in the preseason and Paul isn't that bad of a player.

  • In reply to cesba:

Mike Videira is on for Baggio Husidic

  • In reply to cesba:

Corben Bone enters for Marco Pappa

  • In reply to cesba:

86' Orr Barrouch is on for Logan Pause

  • In reply to cesba:

    Full Time : DC 1 Fire 0

Maybe Saturday they can play with a full eleven for ninety minutes.

  • In reply to cesba:

No chances whatsoever generated from the run of play by either side. What a waste of time.

  • In reply to cesba:

That was very poor indeed. No class or Guile in the midfield and no real threat upfront. How many fire players are in 6 figures? How many with a 2 or 3 before the 5 zeros? I just can't see this team being better than mediocre. You get what you pay for. We need at least 2 stud players, a central attacking midfielder and a striker, but that's not going to happen now.

  • In reply to cesba:

As bad as the match was, I'm a big fan of Andrew Bell as a play by play guy. I know he does stuff with USL's national broadcasts and I think Crandall compliments him pretty well.

Both have a good knowledge of the game, don't overdo it and still find a way to have fun. I know Andrew is President of the Charleston Battery, but I vote for Julian to find a way to get his voice on in Chicago...

  • In reply to cesba:

Very disappointing, even with only 10 men. Bad passes and bad decision making summed up the game for me. DC fans have even less to be happy about. Being a man up for 3/4 of the game and they looked pretty clueless. Regarding the announcers, I'm afraid I can't jump on their band wagon. I know it's just a pre-season game but they continually talked through the action on the field. Crandall was more down in the mouth than the game!!! Also he made a comment that with a 5 man midfield the Fire wasn't going to get many chances to score and therefore they needed to make use of the chances when they came. Does he know we are playing with 2 up front with 2 outside midfielders going forward??? Similar to Barca --in name only. Admittedly there wasn't much of anything happening today but the formation wasn't the issue!!

  • In reply to shortpasses:

DC fans have even less to be happy about.

To be fair, our starting 11 was probably pretty close to what we'll see on opening day, whereas DC used primarily reserves.

  • In reply to Ufficio:

If what we saw today is what our starting 11 is going to look like without Nyarko we are in "Deep Trouble."
So far I am not impressed with Gaston and Chavas.

  • In reply to Ufficio:

Not meaning to nitpick but Quaranta, Fred, Barklage, Braseco, Morsink, Davies, Onstead, Burch, and King are not reserves.

  • In reply to shortpasses:

I meant non-starters. I imagine there's there will be a small intersection between DC's starting 11 today and that of their season opener. Definitely can't say we faced their first team.

  • In reply to shortpasses:

how long until we start calling for cobos to be fired?

  • In reply to firefan1998:

    Where have you been?

  • In reply to firefan1998:

Team really didn't look interested in the match before the red card for some reason. After the red card you knew it was going to take a miracle for them to score.

Begs a serious question of the 3-5-2, especially if the formation is causing you to leave one of your top two players (Nyarko) on the bench when you're having trouble creating anything in the attack.

Such a razor thin margin for error right now because the offense hasn't clicked, albeit, they've been playing down a man a lot... I'm sure Frank and Carlos aren't happy that the two most competitive matches in this tournament will have seen them play more with 10 men then with 11 and the final game heading into the season is against Charleston.

    Not a great situation.

  • In reply to trendingarea:

I have to believe Nyarko will be in the starting eleven in place of Paul when the season kick offs. Along with Pappa, he is their most dangerous weapon offensively.

  • In reply to cesba:

If Nyarko doesn't start on Saturday then I can't see him starting in the season opener. We have all our "starters" out there besides him, so to me that would say he's not going to be starting... If he doesn't start... well I'll be really mad.

  • In reply to cesba:

Agree that DC performed better but IMO it was because they were playing very conservatively while the Fire was forcing the play--which led to turnovers in bad spots. Also, seemed that the Fire midfield seemed to disappear at inopportune moments -- lots of space for DC to operate in on the Fire side. I liked the one touch but it seemed to be rather hurried, haphazard. Regading Nyarko -- absolutely he should have been out there first thing. Bring Paul in later.

  • In reply to shortpasses:

41' Segares for Anibaba and Ferrari for Puerari

  • In reply to cesba:

yeah, i agree...especially in this pre season tourney, let the kids play

  • In reply to cesba:

i didnt see it, so i cant say anything about the specific incident, but chicago already getting a bad reputation with the refs, it seems

  • In reply to cesba:

btw...Bell keeps referencing the refs "can of paint" to mark 10 yards on free kicks.....FMF refs use the same "paint" on free kicks....I've often wondered why no other leagues use it since the stuff dissolves rather quickly

  • In reply to cesba:

Not a single real chance for the Fire even before the card. Can't see how they're possibly going to score with 10 men. Oh well, only preseason.

  • In reply to cesba:

DC leads 1-0 at the half. United had the better of the play even before the red card.

Paul had a good game against TFC but I'd really like to see Nyarko with the first team before the season kicks off.

  • In reply to cesba:

ya think? nyarko may be the best player on the team, he NEEDS to be in the starting 11.

  • In reply to Adam25:

Looks like a huge crowd out there. ;)
