Training Phase 2

The Fire are currently in Ave Maria, Florida for Phase 2 of training camp while apparently continuing to look at as many available players as possible.  On top of the eight additional trialists the team is also hoping to add an Eastern European attacking midfielder.

The first competitive match of the pre-season will be held tomorrow at 7 EDT against Florida Gulf Coast.

International Striker X

I know you may have heard this before but I'm told that the drawn out paper work process  allowing the Fire to finally announce the name of the second international striker the club has signed is nearly complete.  There should be an announcement made very soon.  The player has been signed and is more of a true #9 than Gaston Puerari.

Rumorville

Since some of you have asked, there is absolutely no truth to the rumor regarding Costa Rican midfielder Walter Centeno.  The Fire appear to be interested in bringing in younger players and are no longer in the market for older, veteran players at this point.

  • last evening I had the opportunity to talk with the president of the Fire. I have been one of the critics of the team for about two months. After talking to Julio I better understand where he is at and what he is trying to do. To start off he has only had the job for a short period of time. He admits that team was bad last year and that there were some bad eggs in locker room that put the damper on any success especially with the young players. Those players are gone and as a result he thinks that the attitude of the team will improve.
In regards to the administration of the soccer side of the team they have to show improvement this year. He does not seem to be a man with a lot of patience for failure. He is committed to winning with young players. He knows that there is a lot of impatient fans but only a change in the play will solve that problem.
Finally he talked about an interesting concept. In the past the scouts were chasing players all over the world with little success. The concept that he is following is to have relations with particular teams in Countries like Columbia, Argentina, Mexico and the Balkins. These relations should give the fire a source of good young talent to augment the US players.
I am going to give this guy a chance he wants a young well coached team that captures the heart of the Chicago Fans.

    It's Julian not Julio. ;)

  • In reply to brokerjohn:

Sounds fine but doesn't change this off season lack of activity or entering the season with the guts of a million dollars unspent. By the way, striker x, if the picture is to be believed, is obviously Scottish. That is not an x but the cross of St Andrew on a blue background. Want to hear more about the number 10 from eastern Europe. I feel a flicker of hope.

  • In reply to brokerjohn:

Nice pic Guillermo, glad you went with the classic racer X. Now we need Clutch Cargo telling us the paperwork has not cleared yet!

  • In reply to brokerjohn:

Thank you, Guillermo for the up date in Training notes and more.
John since you talked to Julian Posada last night what is his
excuse for not having a Jersey sponsor, or Television and Radio
Contract so far???? All the players our Great Coach Carlos wanted and brought to the Fire last year are gone.
Are we supposed to believe that he learned a lot from his poor
coaching last year and "All will be good this Year"???

  • In reply to brokerjohn:

Any updates on a jersey sponsor?

  • In reply to brokerjohn:

john, are you good friends with julian? why did you not ask him tough questions? like: where is a sponsor? what kind of marketing are you doing to get people to buy season tickets or any tickets at all?(section 8 is doing a much better job marketing than the fire are at this point) why is he concerned with the soccer side, i thought that was for klopas and cobos to handle while he works on the business side(tv, radio, sponsor, advertisements)? why hasn't he hired someone to fill the void left by becky carroll? how is he going to improve community relations, especially with the fans? those are the questions i want answered from him. if i wanted to know what was going on with player signings and the direction(if there is one) of the team i will want to hear from klopas.

  • In reply to brokerjohn:

i like the plan of going for young talent. also good that they are looking to get ties to other teams.

i wonder who the locker room cancers were... conde is one of my guesses. maybe castillo, tho i am skeptical if he was around long enough to have any influence?

  • In reply to brokerjohn:

Any thoughts how the Fire will do in this years USOC, no div 2 so easier to get pass the 1 round...

  • In reply to Adam25:

They still have to qualify for the competition by playing MLS teams. Also, they lost to a 3rd division team last year if i recall correctly. It all depends on how seriously they take it.

  • In reply to Adam25:

We'll know it will be a poor year if "This Space for Rent" appears on the front of the Fire jersey on opening day.

  • In reply to Adam25:

I am suppose to have lunch in the next week or two with Julian Posada and I will ask some of the tough questions . I wish he would respond directly to some of his critics as he is a good buy that is not making any quick decisions that he might regret. I personally hope the team follows the theme of going young and hopefully with another coach in the years to come. I do not think old De Los Cabos is the man for a young team.

  • In reply to Adam25:

Starting line up for the first pre-season match of the year:
    Johnson
    Anibaba, Mikulic, Gibbs, Segares
    Nyarko, Husidic, Pause, Paladini
    Puerari, Ferrari

  • In reply to cesba:

    pappa in CLDC doghouse again?

  • In reply to cesba:

Nope...he's on with Ristic at 30'

  • In reply to cesba:

Here's to hoping a guy named Ferrari makes the team purely because of how cool his name sounds!

  • In reply to cesba:

    ristic playing winger or fullback?

  • In reply to cesba:

I believer Ristic was in at midfield. Not sure though.

I appreciate John's input, but I guess so much of the talk about the Fire FO methods, etc. is just uninspiring news to me at this point. Not that I've given up hope on the Posada, Klopas, CDLC, et al. In fact, I bought my first season tickets this year. I will always love the Fire, but I'm more concerned with some of the points penapirata brought up. Namely, my biggest concern is jersery sponsorship, since that would obviously bolster the Fire's bottom line w/ a deal inked to bring in some extra revenue.

I do think what the Fire put into the USOC this year will be a different mindset than last year. Personally, and giving CDLC the benefit of the doubt, I could see the USOC being one of those facets of US/MLS play that he was not acclimated to. He obviously didn't put as much behind it as the fans have, otherwise the glaring indifference in the USOC games wouldn't be so evident. I think he'll come into play with a different mindset, which will hopefully be reflected in the Fire making more of a showing against lower division teams in the Cup (that's assuming they qualify as one of the two out of 10 who will "play in").

I think it's fair to say that now that we're in full preseason swing, we need to see what the Fire are going to do and what kind of team they're going to present on opening day. 6 months of talking about what they're NOT doing hasn't yeilded much from the Fire FO, perhaps we just need to let the season start, unfold, and see what's in store.

  • In reply to cesba:

    Gentlemen,

I spent the last few hours at Ave Maria to watch our beloved Fire play against FGCU.

    Couple Notes:

    - I did not see Gibbs in the starting line up.
    - We are very very very rusty and sloppy, to some degree expected after the cold Chicago winter, none the less, disappointing.
    - Played three 30 min periods to a 2-2 draw. The goals from FGCU came late and against our young trialists (The second was a poor PK call)
    - Goals came in second period from Papps. The second goal was on a corner from Pappa, a very nice header from Siriboe!
    - Kwame was my man of the day and actually should have had a second goal. Wide open, headed right at the goalie. Also played solid defense and was very vocal.
    - As for the new signing, Perarri... he didnt do anything special, but he also didnt do anything bad, the verdict is still out. Played as a withdrawn striker to Ferrari, who in my opinion didnt do much.
    - Ristic was slightly dissapoointing, however he did not get much of the ball. Still very hopeful for his potencial. He played in the seonc dperiod with carr and pappa.
    - Over all, we desperately need at least another talented striker if not two. In typical Fire fashion missed a few opportunities in the final third against a lack luster FGCU defense...

Now the focus is real competition.. bring on the Red Bull in Ft. Lauterdale!

    From Southwest Florida.. GO FIRE!

  • In reply to TKing:

    Nice recap Tking.

  • In reply to cesba:

Side note: Ristic played Right wing

  • In reply to brokerjohn:

Way to Drink the Kool-Aid John.
    Wake up man??

  • In reply to brokerjohn:

    FYI
I just had breakfast with Cristiano Ronaldo and he said he was signing with the Fire.
Also I had lunch with Messi and Dinner with Bradley and they both said that they are also signing with the Fire.
(if you believe this you will also believe everything John says)
