Here's a pretty decent highlight video from yesterday's Fire v Sounders preseason match.  Check it out here.

  • love the pass combination that led to a (poor) shot at 1:38

  • i know its only highlights, and its only pre-season, but IMO, if they can play this loose in the regular season, they will do all right

last season, it just seemed like about May or so, everyone was playing with a stick up their ass or something.

It's early and it's hard to tell from the highlights and what we've seen so far but there does seem to be better flow so far in the pre-season.

  • In reply to cesba:

Stern John just signed with Chivas USA. The Fire could have giving him a look.

    old and recovering from injury

Honestly, I like what I see. Did they miss chances? For sure, but they def. look more comfortable as a team unit than at any point last year, and seem to be working well in transition. I like what I've seen thusfar from these highlight collages in preseason, and I think if they keep working hard, they're going to surpass everyone's admittedly low expectations. Time will tell, but I don't think they look horrible, that's for sure.

  • In reply to longoria3:

the wrong kind of egos have left the locker room. The only question I have is will DLC leave the same lineup for two games in a row?

  • In reply to WBO5ElGuapo:

Speaking of bad egos, Nery Castillo with a "Chicago-tough" 9 minutes off the bench for Aris in a 2-2 draw. I guess Greece is where he belongs...

  • In reply to WBO5ElGuapo:

Very entertaining video -- congrats to the producers. With all the caveats listed already, the Fire look much better than last year, passes criper and more accurate; their buildups looked very dangerous and creative. There is hope.

  • In reply to WBO5ElGuapo:

The Fire will take on defending MLS Cup champion Colorado Rapids in US Open Cup qualifying play. Date and location are yet to be determined.

  • In reply to cesba:

i'd like to see teh Fire take the US cup more seriously this season. with 28 or 30 man roster, they should have enough rotation to field a rested & aggressive squad for these matches

  • In reply to cesba:

so the strategy is to use 3 central backs this season?

does that mean the outside backs are going to get forward more?

as long as the outside backs are given the freedom to support attacks, this could be an interesting season

also wonder if he will stick with the 3 center back system if one of the first choice gets injured. i am not sold on KWS after last season, but maybe it was just lack of experience

  • In reply to CountChocula:

I think he meant that the three starters - Anibaba, Gibbs, and Mikulic can all play center back. Segares seems to be getting forward alot in the exhibition matches.

  • In reply to CountChocula:

I didn't see anything different from last year. I say they have a chance if they win the Carolina Challenge Cup. I think they still have a long way to go, I bet CDLC still hasn

  • In reply to CountChocula:

I Like the 3-5-2 personally.. but really i think it plays more like 3-5-1-1 since they envision purneri(s/p) playing more in the hole and just the Ferrari or Chaves up top. But with our players i think it is really effective, since ristic, kinney, gonzalo, all like to get up the pitch so playing them as wing backs i think works...

  • In reply to CountChocula:

Like,,,,Love that they're going young and I wouldn't spend another penny for anyone. Throwing money at the problem is no solution. Go Fire!

  • In reply to bert:

MLS pays the salaries so it's not a matter of the Fire throwing money at anyone other than DP's. It makes no sense to be way below the cap, as they appear to be. This squad is short on a goal scorer, even if Chaves works out, and they need another CB and defensive midfielder. A few key injuries and they are naked.
