Fire Draw 2-2 in First Result of 2011

The Fire can't be too happy with a 2-2 draw with Florida Gulf Coast University on Thursday night.  The game was played in three thirty minute halves and featured most of the trialists on the pitch as the Fire relinquished a two goal lead after the first sixty minutes.

Here's the Fire line-up:

Sean Johnson (Jon Conway 31', Alec Dufty 61')

Jalil Anibaba (Yoximar 31', Eric Ustruck 61', Yoximar 79')

Josip Mikulic (Kwame Watson-Siriboe 31')

Cory Gibbs (Pari Pantazopolous 31', Jalil Anibaba 61')

Gonzalo Segares (Michael Muniz 31', Evan Schwarz 61')

Patrick Nyarko (Bratislav Ristic 31', Jochian Bendu 61')

Baggio Husidic (Fabio Burbano 31', Martin Rivas 61', Shane Clark)

Logan Pause (Michael Videira 31', Corben Bone 61')

Daniel Paladini (Marco Pappa 31', Orr Barouch 61')

Gaston Puerari (Calen Carr 31', Amani Walker 61', Jason Herrick 82')

Gabriel Ferrari (Anderson Costa 31', Davis Paul 61')

As you can see subsitutions were very liberal while Marco Pappa and Kwame Watson-Siriboe scored the goals for the Fire.  The team should have some highlights up on the their site today.

  • If they relinquished the lead after 60 minutes then I'm not sure that speaks well for the trialists, however I would like to know from third party observers, how the Anibaba/Watson-Siriboe/Bone/Paul combo up the middle looked. Though, in all fairness, they were surrounded by players that will either be cut or fill out the end of the bench. Is somebody cueing up "Tainted Love"???

  • bone playing with the 3rd string. i dont think CLDC likes him

  • In reply to CountChocula:

    I don't like CDLC

  • final score doesnt concern me too much either. the tying goal was on a pk and it was the 3rd team in the game when both opposing goals were scored

a bit dissappointing the first choice strikers did not get a goal in tho. but these guys are all new to each other, so it will take the whole pre-season to get the team gelled

also like that ristic linked up with pappa on the first goal.

anyone have any knowledge on how nyarko played?

  • I wouldn

  • i like the red shirt and blue short combo they wore.. I really think with a tornoto also being all read that the red and blue is a nice look and represents the the badge well.. also the keeper for Florida seemed to make some nice stops on the first batch of 30min

  • Internationl striker X will finally be announced at 1 pm today

  • In reply to cesba:

I hope to be excited but am also apprehensive at the same time. I don't like feeling so conflicted...

Hope next year they get going a little sooner with these games next year, would be better for all concerned.

i agree Count, Bone seems to be keeping his benchwarmer status locked up...

  • In reply to DerSting:

DLC wouldn't play Bone at all last year and I fear that like Krol, DLC doesn't change his mind and Bone is in for another season of inactivity. Fortunately for Bone, DLC won't last the season.

  • In reply to cesba:

Let's hope and pray it's someone who has shown decent demostrated ability and who can score.
If this turns out to be as "average " signing, the Fire fans should be enraged.
I've checked the various rumor sites but nothing has come up.
In most cases, with most clubs, when there is a major signing, some advanced word or
rumors surface before the actual signing.
Frankly, I'm not expecting much. If this is not a "major" signingm, then the F/O should have kept their mouth shut in the first place.

  • In reply to cesba:

About to click "Proceed to Checkout" on my Diego Forlan custon Fire jersey.... just say when!

  • In reply to cesba:

Looks like everyone is getting a chance to play.

    1pm which time zone?

  • In reply to cesba:

I think the Jury came back in with the Verdict.
Carlos de los Cobos 'Is the Wrong Guy for Coach of the Fire."
John Age is not a factor in coaching.
Look at Housten, New York and Seattle they are all in Carlos
age group and doing a "Hell of a better Job than Cobos"
We need a New Coach and Peter Wilt back to right the Sinking Ship.
Mr. Posada "Nada" so far isn't doing a good job No Jersy Sponsor,
Television, and or Radio contract announced yet at this late stage.

  • In reply to cesba:

Answer: "I underwhelmed Fire fans on my signing"

    Who is Diego Chaves, Alex?

  • In reply to c0quito18:

There ya have it. Another striker, not too old (just turned 25 the other day).. Could be worse, I suppose.

  • In reply to c0quito18:

Damn, they got the wrong Diego from Uruguay.

  • In reply to lonecoyote:

Don't tell that to Rafa Marquez. He might take our strike force seriously if no one clues him in.

  • In reply to Modibo:

Rafa was always clueless, paritcularly on the back line.
That's why Barca let him go for nothing in return.
I watched most of Barca's games (mostly on-line) over the past 4 years
and I cringed everytime he started on defense.

  • In reply to lonecoyote:

lonecoyote.....as a Fire fan, at times I cringed when I see Pause dribbling the ball forward; it has disaster waiting to happen.

  • In reply to lonecoyote:

Any report on Victor Pineda based on practicing with the team?

  • In reply to longoria3:

I thought he looked pretty good from what I saw briefly at the dome.

  • In reply to Modibo:

i'll wait and see what happens when they hit the field when it counts, but i still hope frank knows what he is doing.

  • In reply to Modibo:

KC just signed their 2nd homegrown, Dallas have 6, Houston 4 DC at least 3, NYR 3 and so on. The Fire have one and yet for years we have been told the Fire were league leaders in this area. I fear we have been fed spin and like every other aspect of the organization, they are clueless. I say this as someone who never criticized Saracan or Hamlett, or Pause as many were wont to do and thought until the last few years, that the Fire were a strong organization. I will now cease complaining and wait for the season.

  • In reply to Modibo:

1 goal in 10 appearances, woohoo what a strike rate he will fit right in.. =/

  • In reply to Modibo:

In some ways, the Fire are stronger now than last year. Both Chaves and Puerari are much better than Banner and Carr. Also, the Fire started out with a pretty decent core with Nyarko, Pappa, Robinson,
Johnson,Segares, Husidic, Pause, Watson-Siriboe, and Ristic, most of whom would be starters on most clubs. In addition the team picked up Gibbs, Mikulic, and Anibaba among others.
This is a pretty solid group to start.
The unknown is how much the other teams have improved which can't be gauged on paper, but on the field. The team as it stands now (another unknown is DLC's coaching ability) would probably qualify for the playoffs.
The problem with that is given the Fire's history and fans expectations is reaching the playoffs is not the goal, but to be competitive with the top teams in the league.
That is why there is so much negativity, the Fire are one or two quality (DP ability) players short from being on the top and the fans don't see any effort by the F/O to secure such players.

  • In reply to lonecoyote:

eh, last season really soured me on the DP thing. obviously castillo was a bad enough of a bust, but really when you think of it, ljungberg was quality in several matches, but how many matches did he really contribute big for a WIN? damn good player, but in a cost-benefit analysis, i'd have to say not good enough.

  • In reply to lonecoyote:

Looks to me like the Fire are going to maybe sign DP in summer. I doesn't like like there will be any good signings to begin the season, glad I did buy my season tix...

  • In reply to Adam25:

correction "didn't buy my season tix..."

  • In reply to Adam25:

Adam, you could be right, more talent could be available during the summer transfer.
The good thing about having 10 qualifying playoff spots in an 18 team league is that a team doesn't have to be competitive to qualify for the 10th spot, they just have to be slightly below average.

  • In reply to lonecoyote:

Lonecoyote, I doubt Robinson would start at fullback or center back for any team, and Sirobie remains to be seen. Segares, at least from last years showing, Ristic and Baggio would likewise make only a few teams starting 11. Nyarko, Pappa, Johnson and Pause are starters, but 4 players is remarkably few for a team that reached the conference playoffs twice in the last 3 years. The problem with the Fire rebuild is it is a year late and 1 million dollars short. not to mention that DLC and Klopas 's judgement is very suspect as most of their picks are gone with several being complete busts.

  • In reply to lonecoyote:

Fox Soccer Channel just released their list of the 29 televised games.
Fire only appear once, Portland 4 times.

  • In reply to lonecoyote:

So do we call them the "Ambiguously (uru) Guay (an) Duo??

  • In reply to lonecoyote:

32 goals in 115 career games at the senior level in all leagues.

  • In reply to lonecoyote:

Darn, just when Kris Boyd was being linked with MLS they get this guy instead.

  • In reply to fire1020:

didnt he just move to middlesbrough last summer? is he on the outs there already?

  • In reply to CountChocula:

Yeah, he wasn't scoring and there was a lot of speculation in January. 27 years old and SPL's all time leading scorer, not bad.

  • In reply to fire1020:

poor Rangers, lost all their goalscorers in the last 2 transfer windows

kenny miller tearing it up in Turkish Lig i believe

  • In reply to CountChocula:

they;d probly have to pay a pretty hefty transfer fee to get boyd anyway, i dont think the Fire would be willing to do that AND pay a probably DP salary

  • In reply to CountChocula:

    true

  • In reply to CountChocula:

Chaves seems alright, but nothing special. The Fire don't come anywhere close to some of the top strike forces in MLS. The outside mid positions seems to be the only places where they seem to have good players. We'll see how Johnson does his second year, but other than that, the indications aren't good for the new season.

  • In reply to fire1020:

eh, i am willing to wait & see

i have pretty good hopes that a few of these "unknowns" will shine this season

  • In reply to CountChocula:

I'm with the Count...lets wait and see before judging the signings.

  • In reply to CountChocula:

I can think of at least a half dozen better signings this year without the fuss or fanfare. I even think, on paper, some MLS trialists look better. Houston just signed a Jamacian International centerback, mid 20's, who had to have a trial first. Taino in NY and Dabo in new England and many others come with a better pedigree. let's hope he proves to be a gem, but even then were is all that cap space going?

  • In reply to fire1020:

Do you really think the F.O./DLC would actually choose Kris Boyd over Diego What'shisname?
That would be beyond their ability to think, afterall, they have to live up to their reputations as amateurs and morons. Actually, this would not have been a bad choice if they brought him in as a trialist.

  • In reply to c0quito18:

    Name: Diego Ch

  • In reply to CountChocula:

According to Klopas: "His size, ability and strike rate in Uruguay should assist in his transition to MLS."

Uhh, he's 150, Frank. I wouldn't go bragging about his size.

  • In reply to Modibo:

Oh, right, he was just comparing Chaves to Puerari. Yeah, he's bigger than Puearari all right.

  • In reply to CountChocula:

Overall, he may be a help than a hindrance.
Decent, but not outstanding, doubtful that
he'll be the game changer the Fire needs.
Don't see why it took so long for the Fire to sign him.
May work o.k. if the team finds a quality ACM who will be a starter.
Hope they didn't spend a lot for him.

  • In reply to c0quito18:

Wake me up in 2010, please.

  • In reply to Modibo:

Of course I meant 2012... but at least there was some excitement in 2010 on the signings front.

Predictions: DLC and our Uruguayan amigos will be gone... no offense to them, but statistically speaking small technical guys don't cut it in MLS - Chaves is 5'10", and Puerrari is like, what, 5'8"?

I HOPE they work out, I hope that DLC and Klopas have seen something in these guys and the stream of trialists, that they're forging a diamond in the rough...

But you'll excuse me for begin sceptical.
