Fire Close to Deal with Ramon Morales? - Updated

According to this article the Fire are close to a deal with former Chivas midfielder Ramon Morales.

Morales has been a rumored name for over a year.  He played last in FMF with Estudiantes and had his season cut short due to injury.  He's 35, usually plays on the left side, and recently had surgery according to the article.  If he's available at a decent price he may warrant a spot but I'm not particularly excited about him either.

"I'm very happy that a coach with the quality of Carlos De Los Cobos has noticed me. I'm very grateful there may be an opportunity to keep playing.", said Morales.

"After some time without playing and an injury, I'm very motivated that quality people like Carlos and the Chicago Fire are interested.  It encourages and motivates me."

"I don't think I'll have any problems, they know my siutation with the operation and everything.  If that was a concern I'm sure we could get together and resolve it.  Chicago is a city I really liked."

From DLC..."It was very good to talk to him again and while there's nothing official we are interested in getting something done with Ramon".

Last January rumors swirled that Morales and Fire were close to a contract but nothing materialized.  At this point, Morales seems to be a player who has seen better days and has run out of options in Mexico.  An invite to camp in lieu of a guaranteed contract would probably be a wise move.

UPDATE

A closer look at the story dated December 22, 2010 shows that the comments on the piece were made in March 2010.  It appears that the historically unreliable press south of the border has struck again and this is a rehashed rumor that is no longer relevant.  Hopefully.

More like NO NO NO NO NO!

  • Pleeeeeeeeze no!! Nothing against Morales but the Fire should not be wasting its current very valuable time on an aging, physically suspect player. Frank and DLC--- FOCUS please.

  • We should stop choosing players who have run out of options. Morales was a good player, but the fire could certainly do much better with a younger guy. The two players I'd most like to see them go for in Mexico are Gomez and Torres. Aside from blanco it seems that Mexican dp's fail to pan out in this league. I'm filled with anguish whenever I think of the 1.8 mil that we gave Castillo.

  • The reason that we go after players that have run out of options elsewhere is because those are the players that are willing to come here. Majority of the players have to take a pay cut to come play in this league. You guys are all acting like this is the best league that a player can come to and that we should be picking the players when it is usually the player picking us. Sure we want that early 20's player that is pretty well known and is going to bang in the goals. Were probably going to get some late 20's early 30's player that has seen better days and can hopefully get us 7-9 goals this season. We need to focus on our defense badly this off season.

  • You got to be kidding G.R. another player past his prime???
Is the 2011 Chicago-Fire The New Nursing Home for players past their Prime??? Most of the players we have now are mid fielders why add more??? Please look at proven younger players that will
be around for a number of years and not those that show up with a limp in their step. If this is true about Morales I just lost the small amount of respect I had left for Frank and Carlos.

  • G.R. Don't want to be negative here but Ramon Morales refers to
Carlos de los Cobos as a quality coach. In my humble opinion
Carlos in 2010 did not prove himself to be a quality coach. Look at all the players he is responsible for in 2010. None proved to be of any Quality and only one is left. I am surprised that the Fire Front office is allowing him to even consider a 35 year old midfielder. Don't we need some dynamic forwards???
Then the embarrassing 2010 Season we had under Carlos coaching he should have been let go and not be allowed to pursue players that are beyond their prime. Just my humble opinion. Don't Want 2011 To Be Another DISASTER.

  • Maybe Geritol or Grecian Formula should be the new jersey sponsor...

I'd like to see Elmers glue :)

  • In reply to Janjo:

Are you sure you don't mean poligrip?

  • In reply to DerSting:

I was thinking more in the lines of a glue factory were old horse are or were sent to

  • In reply to Janjo:

Poligrip for Pele and Gerd Mueller when the Fire sign them to a one year deal in a vain attempt to win some silverware this year.

  • In reply to Janjo:

How about Klyneex as a sponsor?

  • In reply to Janjo:

Looks like JCO is headed back to MLS......

  • In reply to cesba:

I guess Chivas thinks 3rd time is the charm??
JCO is the psycho girl friend of the MLS. Does not appreciates what he has, always thinks he can get better, makes up lies, awful in the sack, and goes out with your friends once he's been dumped just to be around you. Psycho?!!

  • In reply to cesba:

When Chivas comes to TP it will be an epic match between "attractive soccer" and "defense minded soccer".

The grounds keepers better reinforce the middle third of the field for that one, it'll get a lot of wear and tear.

    I predict 0-0.

  • In reply to cesba:

the fire have 3 major needs

striker, center back and central midfield

they have the wings pretty well covered i think

  • In reply to CountChocula:

    Don't forget BALLS!!!

  • In reply to CountChocula:

    Guille,

I say the only way we take on Morales is if we can give him the retired #10 and under the contract stipulation that he be the slowest player on the team in 2011. I know this may pose a problem as Nery has these requirements in his contract however I think we can field two #10's as long as they're not playing at the same time and, given their injuries, I'm sure that won't happen.
In all seriousness, if the Fire do go get a player from Mexico aside from the Americans playing in the FMF I say they take a chance on Adolfo "El Bofo" Bautista. Chivas may or may not let him go but I think he'd be a good play-maker ala Cuatemoc Blanco.

  • In reply to c0quito18:

El Bofo has been a Chivas USA rumor for the last few years.

  • In reply to Janjo:

I wouldn't believe any of this Morales story until someone on the Fire confirms it. Even though there is a quote attributed to De Los Cobos and the story is dated December 22 it just doesn't sound right. Combine that with a similar January 13 story that also included quotes from Morales, it all sounds like bunk but interesting bunk nonetheless.

  • Let's draft well and build a good development system instead of buying players past their expiration date. Dynasties are built on youth, not experience.

  • Agreed Patrickhattrick,
We need skillful youthful Players that can be around for a number
of years. We want an exciting attacking team. "Not a limping Older Team based on acquiring players beyond their prime."
Why is Management even considering a 35 year old???
They need to get rid of "That Geritol For Lunch Bunch Mentality."

  • Your friggin kidding me. These idiots travelled all over Europe snort'n coke off the backs of Eastern European escorts to bring back a gamemy Mexican league 35 year old ?? WTH!! I dont get it, are we worse than the cubs fans when it comes to being hopeful. they better have Polish night, start lowering the beer prices and have $1 hot dogs permanently. that's the only reason I'll be showing up to the games. OH, AND BRING BACK THE SUPER NACHOS!!

  • In reply to Janjo:

Since CJ Brown retired, they need a newer version of CJ; another old veteran in the locker room.

  • In reply to longoria3:

I think the new version wears #12

  • In reply to cesba:

    ugh!!!! I forgot about him.

  • In reply to cesba:

MLSsoccer.com's Kick Off this morning linked to articles claiming that Fiorentina's Adrian Mutu was on his way to MLS and Guillermo Franco was in discussions to join MLS on the recommendation of Cuautehmoc Blanco.

Both would be welcome here in my book. Franco is available now since he is out of contract.

It appears Robbie Keane will also be available in January.

  • In reply to cesba:

YES! Robbie Keane all the way!!! Bring in the Irish demographic in Chicago! Not sure if he's at the level of playing in MLS, still a pretty great player. Go for it.

  • In reply to cesba:

I think we will be okay as long as they don't follow our posts. We just might scare them away.

  • In reply to cesba:

I wish ther MLS would act like a aaa ballclub to teach youngsters with hopes of pro soccer....instead of a pasture

  • In reply to bert:

True...but it's a reality of the league. It's changing but slowly.

Mutu would be a gamble because of his past off-field issues and Franco has been off for the last six months but I think both can still be effective in MLS.

  • In reply to bert:

To get the most for the least, all we want is a play-off team. I just want a team that competes and is fun to bring the family to see..Merry Christmas to all.....

  • In reply to bert:

I wish the MLS would have free agency. I really think they bend over backwards towards New York & L.A.

  • In reply to bert:

MERRY CHRISTMAS! And Robbie Keane would be wonderful for the Fire. I would actually still be pretty happy if Fulham signed him.

  • In reply to bert:

    Merry Christmas everyone!

Here's hoping Klopas found a #9, a #10, and another defender in his stocking this morning.

  • In reply to bert:

    Happy Holydays Everyone.
Thank you, Guillermo for all those Great Comments and your hard work keeping us all informed.
