John and Krol Officially Released

A busy day at Toyota Park continued with the announcement that Krzysztof Krol and Collins John were being released.  Krol's departure was expected given that his one year loan agreement expires in December and he has expressed interest in pursuing options in Europe.  The "mutual decision" to part ways with John came as a bit of a surprise since his intial signing included an 18 month contract with options for the second half of 2011 and more expensive options in 2012 and 2013.

The Fire were likely looking to move in another direction with the former Fulham forward after a disappointing season which produced only three goals.  A mutual agreement could have come allowing John to pursue other opportunties by way of a buy out or understanding that John was free to pursue other teams immediately.  Either way the Fire now have cleared substantial salary cap space in a span of a few hours today.

John Thorrington's 2010 salary of $177,000.00 was due to increase, Collins John's $160,000.00 per year salary would have carried over to next season, and Krzysztof Krol's $100,000.00, along with the retirement of Brian McBride and CJ Brown has given Frank Klopas room to add quality reinforcements.

MLS Trades

The conclusion of the expansion draft set off a flury of trades within the league.  The moves being made in Portland are odd to say the least.

The Timbers traded Dax McCarty to DC United in exchange for Rodney Wallace and a 4th round draft pick seemingly minutes after acquiring him as the first pick in the expansion draft.

They also traded Anthony Wallace back to Colorado for allocation money after selecting him in the expansion draft as well.  Perhaps John Spencer was given a quota on Wallaces.

Spencer followed that up by trading Arturo Alvarez to Real Salt Lake for a second round pick.  RSL now has another weapon to call off the bench in an already deep midfield.

Not to be outdone the WhiteCaps traded Sanna Nyassi to Colorado for an international player roster slot, traded O'Brian White to the Sounders for allocation money, and sent both Alejandro Moreno and Alan Gordon to Chivas USA for allocation money.  Gordon was acquired earlier in the day from Chivas in the draft.

Several other players were released from their clubs today including Mista at Toronto FC.

The re-entry draft on December 8 should be very, very interesting.

  • lots of cap space open now, so lets get some quality (and non injury-prone) players this offseason!

Those players aren't lining up to come play with us. We could do a lot worse than Collins John as a striker for us. Remember we could still lose Ljungberg and Conde this off season. That would give us even more cap space and no players. I bet the Timbers or Whitecaps would love to have John on their squads.

  • In reply to Rubberbandman189:

Portland and Vancouver now have an opportunity to pick him up for nothing. I'm guessing neither one will be interested.

  • In reply to cesba:

Really? I think there is a lot worse out there than John. A young, experienced forward on an expansion team would be a good thing.

  • In reply to Rubberbandman189:

Unless he's willing to take a huge paycut his recurring health issues and history of questionable work ethic is probably enough to scare them away.

  • Let's see if these scouting trips bear any fruit. It seems that there are more checks and balances in place now to avoid busts like Martinez, John, etc.

  • In reply to cesba:

John and Krol being released opens up 2 of our int'l spots, too, right? That could make this euro scouting trip even more important.

  • In reply to RedLine55:

    Redline....that is correct.

  • Now 2011 will be a rebuilding year. So many changes. And this is only getting started. reentry draft coming soon.

  • In reply to Adam25:

They can't wait until July to add quality this time. The team has to be intact come training camp in April.
