Matkovich and "Profe" Out

The Fire have released Assistant Coach Mike Matkovich and Fitness Specialist Alvaro "El Profe" Briones.  Matkovich has been an assistant since January of 2009 after replacing Chris Armas on the staff.  Briones joined the staff this past February, shortly after Carlos De Los Cobos was hired.

What does this all mean?  In pro sports, changes in the assistant coaching staff generally indicate that the head coach is returning after a difficult season.

  • Any bets on how long before CJ Brown is added to the staff?

  • In reply to cesba:

I give it three months, following an exhaustive search and at least one public rejection by another candidate.

  • In reply to DDT5583:

Have to think it will be much sooner than that.

  • In reply to DDT5583:

Mike Matkovich is likeable the players respect him he speaks English
knows the league and its players. Why should he be the scape goat for Carlos de los Cobos. Most of the players he brought in were a
huge disapointment. Getting rid of Alvaro Birones was a good idea
getting rid of the Idiot Carlos de los Cobos is even a better idea.
There are good coaches available. I dont want to see another disaster year in 2011 under De los Cobos who has a proven track record of bing a huge disapointment.

  • In reply to TigerJMS:

I will agree that Matko is a very knowlegeable soccer man and that he does speak English. However, as far as the likeable part that players respect, ask a bunch that left last year as well as the bunch of overtrained and overly demeaned players from this year, and you might get a different answer (if they talk, and they might now).
Too many injuries were suffered by our players during training this year. Unacceptable for a lean schedule with
virtually no US Open Cup, no show SuperLiga and no other obligations, and a lot of time resting during the WC.
CDLC and his own hand picked staff (if he gets a say) can't help but do better. If not, then, of course, adios amigo.

  • In reply to DDT5583:

That description of Matkovich also fits CJ Brown.

  • In reply to DDT5583:

Michael Owen doesn't seem likey to have very many opportunities with MU coming up with Rooney, Berbatov, Macheda and Hernandes, and has stated that he would rather not play for a lower EPL team. the Fire should start talking to him the way they did Nery Castillo.

  • In reply to fire1020:

Interesting, but he does have a history of injuries

  • In reply to cesba:

    How about Giggs or Seedorf?

  • In reply to longoria3:

I'd take either one in a second.

  • In reply to longoria3:

I still think Seedorf would be the best pplayer to bring in. I read something on here a while ago about Van Nistelrooy, with his scoring abillity he could be an instant hit in MLS.

  • In reply to fire1020:

I agree with you on Seedorf. He is also very good with media and would be a good spokesman.

  • In reply to fire1020:

The Van Nistelrooy thing is interesting but it is like replacing McBride for McBride. Another name that came up is Frings from the German national team. I would love to see him in a Fire uniform; he is huge upgrade than Pause. In reality, New York is his first choice.

  • In reply to longoria3:

I'd pass on Frings. He sounds like a guy looking to play out his career on easy street.

  • In reply to longoria3:

MLS is being considered for inclusion in the Copa Liberadores. This would be a huge step up from the CCL.

  • In reply to fire1020:

Travel would be a big issue that needs to be figured out before making that jump.

he'll fit right in then! lol

  • In reply to cesba:

I'll take Michael Owen with one leg

  • In reply to cesba:

If the Fire do get rid of Castillo what's the over/under on how long it will take to get another fading star from Mexico to wear the "retired" #10? Actually, in all seriousness I think Ramon Morales from Guadalajara would be a good addition to the midfield if they want to go that route. Any word on that French midfielder that came in for the sister cities tourney that the Fire had their eye on? He was phenomenal and could dribble while fending off defenders, it would be nice to see at TP. Still working on the season tickets. Suggestions welcome.

  • In reply to c0quito18:

Morales was mentioned in some rumors back in January but I think he's past his sell by date. You're referring to Ludovic Giuly....he's under contract with PSG until July.

How long have you been a sth?

  • In reply to cesba:

2 years as a STH after I went to half of the games in '06, 11 in '07, and all but one in '08. I figured it was cheaper than paying ticketmaster every time.

Side bar: I read on my twitter time line a REtweet from Section8 that a woman whom I believe is Krol's wife saying he is NO longer a member of the Fire. Any truth to this rumor?

  • In reply to c0quito18:

That is indeed Krol's wife. If you recall, there was a tweeting incident earlier this year which prompted Krol to proclaim that he wanted to stay in Chicago for the immediate future.

We'll see if he shows up to training on Monday. I'm pretty sure he won't be back in 2011 though.

  • In reply to DDT5583:

Brian McBride on ESPN2 in-studio doing Columbus/Colorado playoff game.

  • In reply to cesba:

Let the housing cleaning begin. Matkovich was kind of a surprise and Birones were a great decision. They had a lot of injuries this year under this so called fitness guru; it was time for him to go.

  • In reply to cesba:

I thought Matkovich was doing OK. Why they even practice till 11/19 season over, CDLC doesn't have a good idea of who he wants to keep then I think we in a bit of trouble.
