Julio Martinez Released

When asked about Julio Martinez' status last night after the US Open Cup match, Carlos De Los Cobos inferred that "he was not right to play".  It was assumed that this was due to injury.  Regardless if that was the case or not, Martinez was released today by the Fire.

Sam has more details on the release here.

Malaury Martin is no longer on trial and won't be offered a contract but it's possible that Jeremiah White or Bratislav Ristic could fill the spot.

  • The last two days have not been good for El Salvador National team players. DC United released Christian Castillo yesterday.

  • I have no problems with releasing martinez. But bottom line, were awful right now. Other than pappa's bomb from midfield we didn't do anything against bthe revolution accept for defend for the last 30 min. No possesion, no oppurtunities, no nothing. We can't continue doing this. We will not be scoring much with just Mcbride and Dimitrov on the card.

Come this transfer window, bring in Blanco, Ristic,Jeremiah White and a forward who can put the ball in the back of the net. I'm so tired about hearing about Mcbrides workrate and the hussle of our midfielders. i would rather have a forward that doesnt run as much who can score goals. We have no midfield right now, hence bring in the 3 players previously mentioned and a forward. It;s not looking good right now. We can only improve after the transfer window.

"i would rather have a forward that doesnt run as much who can score goals" ... Duh?! We would also like to have wingers who beat defenders every time and put crosses right on to forwards heads.

Do you think Blanco can play for 90 min? He will not accept being a sub and thats all he can play at his age. Blanco does not have a position. He cant play in the middle because he plays NO defense whatsoever. He cant play up top because he doesnt work hard and he cant beat anybody. The only thing he can do is roam the outsides of the field and make a good pass now and then. With him on the field we would have to play with 2 holding midfielders because of his inability to defend. Blanco is not what the team needs on the field. Butts in seats is the best thing Blanco brings to the table now...

  • In reply to jking:

I'm a little disappointed Martin didn't work out. His credentials seem to suggest he's doing something right and AS Monaco has produced some decent players.

  • In reply to cweimers:

he was also young. I wonder what killed the interest for Frank and Carlos?

  • In reply to cweimers:

Not sad to see Martinez go but am amazed that Calen Carr, who has never been a decent player and rarely plays, is still in MLS. If and when he is released, no MLS team will pick him up. He is perhaps the worst player in MLS and certainly one of the least soccer savvy, a headless chicken. I also think it is now safe to say the Collins John is a mistake. I do not see how the Fire have so little depth when teams like LA or Real etc have much deeper squads under the same salary cap. If they do not bring in a DP or resign Conde I think we will know how serious this organization and owner is about competing.

  • In reply to cweimers:

I don't believe for a moment that Frankie Klopas, CdlC, and Hauptmann are not serious about competing... but they have a vision of not only winning, but playing a certain style. They're committed to young up-and-comers rather than old stars on the decline. They have a fundamentally different view of the league than some of the other teams. Whether this pans out or not is certainly up for debate. It may not be possible to do what they want within the confines of MLS' structure, but I wouldn't conclude they're uninterested in competing.

  • I forgot to mention that we need to bring in players so that we can play a 4-4-2 or a 4-2-3-1. This 4-5-1 with just mcbride up top is horrific. Bring in these players and more, we can be a better team. Going from watching world cup games to the Fire-revolution game was a hard transition. Go Fire.

  • In reply to jking:

We play a 4-2-3-1 and its working pretty well. McBride is one of the best target men in MLS. Were scoring goals in almost every game that we play in so it is coming down to the defense not holding up their end. When we bring in new players, who sits then. Not Nyarko, Pappa, or Mapp. McBride isnt going anywhere. Pause is needed in the midfield.

  • In reply to Rubberbandman189:

Actually, Joe, I think De Los Cobos has played a 4-1-4-1 nearly every game, occasionally switching to a 4-4-2 (diamond, i.e. 4-1-2-1-2) We haven't been playing with 2 holding mids at all this year, although sometimes when we've been bunkering we've pulled one of the attacking midfielders (usually Husidic or Lowry) back to defend more.

  • In reply to RadioGonzo:

There is no way we play a 4-1-4-1. Husidic is never up with Mapp. He is always around Pause. Husidic plays right in front of Pause so if you want to get technical, we play a 4-1-1-3-1.

  • In reply to Rubberbandman189:

Joe was pretty accurate with the first comment. The Fire play a 4-2-3-1 with Husidic having the ability to get forward while playing next to Pause most of the time.

  • In reply to Rubberbandman189:

I believe Klopas is committed to winning, I sent an email complaining to my season ticket rep about the horrible play and lack of passion displayed by the team and recieved a phone call from Frank Klopas. He talked to me for a while and sounded just like a disgruntled fan and saw the same problems and needs as we do. I brought up some suggestions and while he was in agreement he explained why it was easier said than done. The teams record and performance thus far is unacceptable, I do have faith in Klopas that he takes his job seriously and will do what he can to try and get us back to winning games.

  • In reply to Rubberbandman189:

understanding that mcBride will play no matter what, we bring in these new players with blanco.
pappa and nyarko both start. mapp is by no means mainstay. he's always been inconsistent even playing in the central midfield. if this this midfielder ristic is as good as advertised and we do sign him. I could see this lineup.

    ------------------Blanco------
    ------------Mcbride/John-------
    Nyarko---------pappa------------White
    ---------Ristic-------Pause---------

    Krol-----Conde-----Brown--------Robinson/Ward

Again, this is aussuming Ristic is a starter and White has a good showing as well. pappa and ristic can both defend. but we need that creativity with new blood. Then you have a deep bench of John/Mcbride, Dimitrov, baggio, lowery, mapp, bone. I really think we have get better midfield productivity.

  • In reply to jking:

My bad too many players lol, meant have a pappa pause midfield and start white on the right. With Ristic on the bench.

  • In reply to jking:

Mapp was playing really well until he got hurt. He does not deserve to be on the bench right now. Pappa should not be in the middle of the field, let alone as a central mid. He needs space on the wings to attack. Blanco was never a target man and would be horrible at it. That would be the worst. McBride is the best target man in the league. Husidic has been playing well and does he really need to see the bench?

    Blanco as a target man...

  • In reply to Rubberbandman189:

I think were going to once again agree to disagree for now. When all the changes come in, we'll see when and if Blanco comes back what the difference is. As well as these other potential players.

By the way, mcbride is nowhere near the best target man in the league. There are a few ahead of him.

FYI- what u consider the best target man in MLS logged 877 min - 4 goals 2 assists Not quite the best.

  • In reply to jking:

He's never been a goal scorer. Target man is not the same as a striker. Target man is someone that you play the ball into and he distributes to his teammates and wins headballs. He doesn't look to beat players and attack the goal. IMO, there isn't a player in MLS better and doing what McBride is asked to do. Brian Ching is the next closest thing to McBride in this league.

  • It is weird how it did not work out here for Martinez , I thought he was going to be good.
Looking ahead , this game in Columbus may decide where this season will be going to rest of the way..The Fire and Crew have tied their last 5 regular season games and they all have been 2-2 ties.
Fire can not lose this game or it would put them 10 points behind them ( that is a shade over 3 games out ). A tie would not be the end of the world being as the Fire plays them at home later in the year.

  • In reply to FireStingDoug:

Not only the Fire need a midfielder or 2 also they need depth at the forward position. With Collins John being out of action, they have Brian McBride and Stefan Dimitrov. Stefan Dimitrov is not good at soccer and McBride is getting up in age. The Fire needs is to get John Thorrington back in the lineup; his injuries are ridiculous. Any word on Tim Ward injury and his status?

  • In reply to longoria3:

Ward is training and should be back soon

  • In reply to FireStingDoug:

What happen to the talk of Lukovic Guily coming to the Fire?

  • In reply to longoria3:

Guily actually has one year left on his contract I believe
