This afternoon Bob Bradley named his 30 man provisional squad for the upcoming World Cup.  Several MLS squads are affected through the loss of key players.

Goalkeepers : Tim Howard, Brad Guzan, Marcus Hahnemann

Defenders : Carlos Bocanegra, Jonathan Bornstein, Steve Cherundolo, Clarence Goodson, Johnathan Spector, Oguchi Onyewu, Jay DeMeritt, Heath Pearce, Chad Marshall

Midfielders : Michael Bradley, Ricardo Clark, Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, Maurice Edu, Benny Feilhaber, Stuart Holden, Jose Francisco Torres, Alejandro Bedoya, Sacha Klejstan, DaMarcus Beasley, Robbie Rogers

Forwards : Jozy Altidore, Edson Buddle, Brian Ching, Robbie Findley, Herculez Gomez, Eddie Johnson

Columbus will be without Chad Marshall and Robbie Rogers while Los Angeles will lose the services of Edson Buddle and Landon Donovan.  Chivas USA also loses Sacha Klejstan and Jonathan Bornstein.  The final 23 man roster will be announced on June 1.

Brazil

Dunga has already named his 23 man squad.  The roster does NOT include Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato, which means both will be available when the Fire face AC Milan on May 30.

  • Buddle and Hernandez in, Charlie Davies out. First names I looked for.

  • Everyone was pulling for Charlie Davies. It's a shame he's not ready yet since he was really starting to hit his stride as a dangerous force up front.

On a related note the Score 670 actually mentioned the release of the 30 man World Cup roster during their afternoon scoreboard update. They even commented that the roster includes former Fire stand-outs DaMarcus Beasley and Carlos Bocanegra.

This marks the first ever serious mention of the Fire during the afternoon show. ;)

Who are the projected starters for Team USA at this point? This team has alot of depth in their roster. Charlie Davies not on the roster due to his injuries has some effect at the forward position.

  • In reply to cesba:

Man, I was really, really, really hoping Charlie would make the team. We'll definitely miss him come World Cup time.

I cant believe some of the picks. here are my thoughts...
    1) If you dont take Charlie Davies then why take an injured Ching? At least Davies is recovering and is healthy. Though Sochoux did not give clearance for Davies health it is still a month away. If he can take Ching who is recovering a hamstring injury then he can try Davies.
    2) There is no way Robbie Rogers and Klegstan Merritt a call up. Rogers has not done ANYTHING for his club let along the National Team. Klegstan hasnt done anything either, he is too inconsistent to be allowed this much lee way. Adu has merritted more of a call up than both of them.
    3) Did anyone see the new SITTER W/ LALAS on MLSSoccer.com? HE recommended McBride for a Call up!!! I cant think of a worse idea!!! We might as well call back Reyna to play next to Bradley!!
I am sick of the US settling for Medicority and veterans. Fresh young blood may make mistakes.. but they also win Championships!!!

  • In reply to TKing:

You have to take anything Alexi Lalas says with two grains of salt.

Injuries as a result of a major car accident and a pulled hamstring are two vastly different circumstances. I would've liked to have seen Davis make it but I can understand Bradey's reasoning if he is indeed not ready to compete at a high level in camp right now. There's not much sense in using a roster spot on a guy that you feel won't be ready in a month.

  • In reply to TKing:

Alexi Lalas says alot of idiotic things. Brian McBride is washed up; he is having a subpar season with Chicago. This is why Lalas is not running any soccer franchise. He put New York and Los Angeles down in the ground. He is the same guy that mentioned Steven Lenhart is the up and coming player in the MLS. As for the USMNT, Eddie Johnson hasn't done anything to be on that list and a healthy Brian Ching disappears. I am shocked that Conor Casey, Jeff Cunningham or Kyle Beckerman did not get a look. I would love to had seen Rimando on that list but the depth chart behind Tim Howard is about accurate with Guzan and Hahnemann.

  • WOW I guess I was wrong about Ronaldinho...
