Morning Update

Hey all, hope all of your weeks are progressing nicely.  Big news for me today as MLSsoccer.com has officially launched.  I'll be residing in the news section of the website, where you can check out my piece on Andrew Dykstra, which I wrote after my interview with him yesterday (Note -- if you read yesterday's Fire Confidential post about Dykstra you probably already know everything I presented in that article.  That doesn't mean you shouldn't check it out though...).

Ok, shameless plugging time is over.  In some real Fire news, the team announced via its twitter feed that an announcement regarding what TV station the Fire will be locally broadcast on in 2010 will be made next week.  You can catch this weekend's game on ESPN.

In more TV news, the Fire announced yesterday that Dan Kelly will be the Fire's play-by-play man this season.  Chris Doran will provide color in the booth.  For those of you who don't remember (or just don't follow hockey...), Kelly served as the play-by-play man for the Blackhawks on Comcast Sports Net from 2006-2008.  He called MLS matches on HD Net in 2005.

I'm expecting to interview Frank Klopas today, so I should be back with an update after I speak with him.  Expect it sometime this afternoon.  Until then...

  • Ask him why, even if Dykstra earned the #1 spot, they cut Busch before Dykstra proved he could be effective in a game? Why not keep him as an insurance policy?

  • In reply to Byron:

Because that insurance policy would be taking 150k+ in cap space for the rest of the season. If the feel Dykstra can do it then there is no room for Busch on the roster. Once the season starts, Busch is guaranteed that money. Would it make sense to have about 400k in cap space sitting on the bench in Mapp, Busch, and Carr and thats not to mention Nyarko that will be playing about the same minutes as last season and I think hes over 100k.

  • In reply to Byron:

    What?! Dan Kelly? Really?

This man is a horrible play-by-play guy. Jeez, anyone who's watched the Hawks during 05-06 knows how inarticulate and sloppy this guy is. Then again, any schmuck can broadcast soccer.

  • In reply to Byron:

Why do we have some hockey guy? Why can't we get a real commentator? I'd be happy to get paid to commentate games and I have a knowledge of soccer.

  • In reply to Byron:

The new MLS web site is really awful. Unfinished and lacking basic info.

  • Neither MLSnet or MLSsoccer seem to be working...
