Fire to trim roster to 24 today

Stefan Dimitrov, Rodney Wallace

According to an email I've received from the Fire, the team is set to trim their roster from 28 down to 24 today. The moves, which I expect to be announced sometime this afternoon, will get the roster down to its final size.

Here are the 24 players I expect to see survive today's cuts: GK (3): Jon Busch, Sean Johnson, Andrew Dykstra

DEF (7): Wilman Conde, C.J. Brown, Krzysztof Krol, Tim Ward, Dasan Robinson, Kwame Watson-Siriboe, Mike Banner

MID (9): Logan Pause, John Thorrington, Corben Bone, Julio Martinez, Baggio Husidic, Marco Pappa, Justin Mapp, Peter Lowry, Drew Yates

FWD (5): Brian McBride, Collins John, Patrick Nyarko, Calen Carr, Stefan Dimitrov

Another player we could see sneak his way on to the roster is Joao Baptista. Baptista has been unable to train with the Fire while they've been in Mexico because of issues with his work visa. The current plan is for him to join the club for the third and final phase of training in Jackson, MS beginning on March 5th. We'll see whether or not he earns himself a roster spot while in Mississippi.

I'll be back later on today when news of the roster trim breaks. Until then, think about how good Shutter Island was. And if you haven't seen it yet, go buy tickets. You won't regret it.

  • Only 7 defenders, including Banner? That seems a bit thin to me. Injuries at the back could really undo this team. I suppose Pause and Thorrington are both capable of filling in at RB in a back 4, but I'd still like to see another true defender on the roster.

  • agreed. 7-9-5 is not the way you do it. Look for Dimitrov and/or Yates (with an outside possibility of Lowry) to be cut in exchange for one of the trialists (possibly Woodbine)

  • No way Lowry goes anywhere. Hes making 20k and is a good player that can play multiple positions. Why is Dykstra still around. There is no need for a 3rd keeper when you can only have 20 senior players.

  • I think the lack of defenders hints a definite 3-back formation. This would favor the Fire's roster, considering the amount of defensive-type mids. Probably DLC's or Klopas's work, 3-4-1-2 would suit the attacking style.

  • Never mind, looks like roster cuts won't be happening for a while. Is this a bad sign?
