Fire sign Watson-Siriboe and Kinney, Release Yates

The Fire just announced that rookie defenders Kwame Watson-Siriboe and Steven Kinney have both agreed to contracts with the club.  The Fire selected Watson-Siriboe, a UConn product, with the 26th pick out and picked Kinney with the 45th selection out of Elon.  Drew Yates, who the Fire selected with the 29th overall pick this year, was released from the team.

"We
are pleased to add Kwame and Steven to the Fire family to help us bring a MLS
Cup back to Chicago," said Fire Technical Director Frank Klopas in a press release.

The moves bring the total number of natural defenders on the roster to seven.  That number rises to eight when Mike Banner, who is capable of playing left back, is included.

I don't know enough about Watson-Siriboe or Kinney's game to really comment on the signings, but I do like the fact that the Fire added two more defenders.  Prior to today, the back line was by far the slimmest position on the team and some added reinforcements will be nice to have.

Per league policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.

  • Oh yeah...that's what I'm talking about...Congrats Steven!!!!!!!!!!

  • Surprised to see Yates was cut. Klopas seemed pretty high on him, and I seem to remember he picked up a couple of assists when he came on after Bone's injury
