Fire defeat FC Dallas 3-0

Marco Pappa

The MLS regular season may not start for another two and a half weeks, but the Fire already has their first victory over a league opponent -- as they defeated Brimstone Cup rival FC Dallas 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in a friendly in Jackson, MS.

Both sides started the match with close to full-strength lineups, with Fire trialist Collins John making his first start with the Fire regulars. John, who will remain on-trial through the end of preseason, took advantage of his opportunity to feature with some of the Fire's more established players, giving the team the lead in the 33rd minute.

John received a lofted Patrick Nyarko pass at midfield, turned and lead a charge towards the Dallas goal. He eventually rounded FCD keeper Dario Sala and tapped a slow roller over the end line to give the Fire all the advantage they would need.

Neither side got on the board again until the 71st minute, when Fire midfielder Marco Pappa scored his second goal in as many games to double the Fire's lead. Midfielder Julio Martinez rounded out the scoring for the Fire in the 85th minute when he pounced on a rebound and hit his shot home.

With the win, the Fire improves its preseason record to 3-1-1. The team's next match will come this Saturday in New Orleans. The opponent in that match has yet to be named.

Chicago Fire: Jon Busch; Tim Ward, CJ Brown, Wilman Conde, Krzysztof Krol (Mike Banner, 65'); Julio Martinez, Peter Lowry, Baggio Husidic, Marco Pappa (Logan Pause, 82'); Collins John (Justin Mapp, 39'), Patrick Nyarko

FC Dallas: Dario Sala; Jair Benitez, Heath Pearce (Jason Yeisley, 73'), George John, Ugo Ihemelu; David Ferreira, Dax McCarty (Eric Alexander, 60), Daniel Hernandez, Atiba Harris; Brek Shea (Zach Lloyd, 57'), Jeff Cunningham (Andrew Wiedeman, 73)
