Fire waive Woolard and Washington - Trim roster to 28

The Fire announced today that they have waived defenders Daniel Woolard and Austin Washington. Washington — whom the Fire drafted in the fourth round of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft — and Woolard — who was drafted in the fourth round of the 2007 SuperDraft — combined to make eight starts in 2009. Here’s Klopas’s quote,... Read more »

Do you believe in miracles?

Last night, some friends and I watched the U.S. Men’s Olympic Hockey Team take on Canada in the round-robin portion of the Olympic tournament. The young American team pulled off the big upset, beating Canada 5-3 to clinch the first overall seed for the knockout phase of the tourney. The game itself was electrifying. It... Read more »

Match of the Week

*No matter what time of year, no matter what continent one is on, on any given weekend one can catch an entertaining soccer game. The key is to know where to look. Well, look no further — here’s a weekly feature that will preview (and eventually recap) my favorite match of the weekend. Consider this... Read more »

Ask Corben Bone

I’m currently in the process of scheduling an interview with Fire rookie midfielder Corben Bone for next week. But, instead of hogging all the questions for myself, I’ve decided to open up the floor so all of you can pose some questions to the Wake Forest product. Bone, who the Fire drafted with the 13th... Getting to know you

Apologies for getting this up a little late, the internet demons were wreaking havoc with my computer all morning.   The Fire comes home today.  The team is done with the Phoenix phase (that has a nice little ring to it…) of their preseason training and will spend the weekend resting in Chicago before heading off... Formation situation

Nearly every single soccer team I have ever played for used one standard formation — the 4-4-2. It’s simple, allows for a... Read more »

Afternoon Delight -- Klopas's thoughts on the game

I briefly spoke with Fire Technical Director Frank Klopas about yesterday’s doubleheader. Unfortunately, I was only able to ask Frank a few questions before he had to go to the team lunch, but he did share some thoughts on the two matches worth sharing. Here they are… On how he thought the Fire performed yesterday:... Read more »

Fire sweeps doubleheader; Wins 4-1 and 1-0

The Fire kicked off 2010 in style yesterday, sweeping their President’s Day doubleheader by defeating the Vancouver Whitecaps 4-1 and the Arizona Sahuaros 1-0 in Phoenix. Collins John and Stefan Dimitrov each scored twice in the Fire’s victory over Vancouver, with John starting and getting his brace in the first half and Dimitrov replacing him... Read more »

Doubleheader Game Thread

The Fire is all set to take on the Vancouver Whitecaps and Arizona Sahauros in today’s preseason doubleheader.  I’ll be providing updates — including in depth descriptions of the goals courtesy of some phone calls from the Fire front office — throughout the afternoon/early evening so stay tuned.  2:58 p.m. —  The Fire and Whitecaps... Fire kicks off preseason schedule with two games today

Yes, I know it’s only preseason. And yes, I know the Vancouver Whitecaps and Arizona Sahauros won’t exactly offer the highest level of competition. But no matter the competition (or lack thereof…) and time of year of the game, I always feel a little excitement when the first match of the year rolls around. So,... Read more »
