Apologies for getting this up a
little late, the internet demons were wreaking havoc with my computer
all morning.
The Fire comes home today. The
team is done with the Phoenix phase (that has a nice little ring to
it...) of their preseason training and will spend the weekend resting
in Chicago before heading off to Guadalajara, Mexico for two more weeks
of training.
I thought about writing
what would've been a poorly researched (I've had a busy week...)
article assessing the two weeks the Fire spent training in the Valley
of the Sun, but ultimately decided not to (but for those of you wondering,
I think the start of the preseason went well). Instead, I've
chosen to use this space (which I suppose is unlimited, we are on the
web after all) to tell you all a little bit more about myself - something
I've never done in the 8+ months I've been writing on this site.
Continue after the jump if you want
to read a stripped-down, bulleted version of my life as it stands.
If that's not your thing, I totally get that. I don't expect
all of you to want to read about a 19-year-old's personality/interests. Here
we go...
- I'm a sophomore at Northwestern
University in Evanston IL, where I'm majoring in Journalism and Economics. - I recently took over as
president of my fraternity (Phi Delta Theta). I can't decide
if I like it or not. - I love soccer.
- I like writing.
- I don't know if I want
to write about soccer for the rest of my life. - I love movies. Some
of my favorites include City of God, The Departed,
Gangs of New York, The Big Lebowski, Caddyshack,
Blood Diamond, Snatch, Almost
Famous, V for Vendetta.... And many, many more. - I kind of like TV, but mostly
stick to watching sports. When I do hit up the network channels
during primetime, it's almost exclusively for "30 Rock."
I also really like "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and "South
Park." Oldies that I love include "The Wire" and "Arrested
Development." Oh, and I used to love "24," but we grew apart... - I have an incredible range
of music tastes. Before my old computer died and took my iTunes
away, I was pretty deep into the bands Animal Collective, Wolf Parade,
The Beatles, and various rap music (Wu-Tang Clan being a common selection).
I told you it was a big range. - Favorite books include,
Brave New World, Soccernomics (seriously, READ THAT BOOK),
For Whom the Bell Tolls, Huckleberry Finn, the entire Harry
Potter series (what can I say; I kind of grew up with that series),
and the Lord of the Rings series. - I like to think of myself
as an interesting person with interesting thoughts. However, I
have a mildly debilitating belief that I'm not and that I don't.
I'm insecure like that. - I will regret telling you
these things some day. - I'm a huge Cubs fan.
- Relatively speaking, I have
an absolutely fantastic life. I'm a very lucky guy. - I don't particularly like
watching the NBA, but I love reading Bill Simmons (who writes a ton
of NBA columns) and Bethlehem Shoals (NBA writer for Fanhouse and freedarko.com). Both are fantastic writers. It'd be incredible to have their talent. - When I played soccer, I
was a central midfielder. My best skill was yelling at the ref.
I think I was my high school team's leader in yellow cards for dissent.
My coaches loved that about me.... - I have no idea why I'm
telling you all of this. - I'm mildly excited and
tremendously terrified about people's reaction to this blog post.
Thanks for sitting through that. Hopefully you know me a little better now. If you have any questions (i.e. "why the hell did you just waste my time with that?" or "why do you think I care about your interests?" or "where's the damn Fire coverage?" ) ask away in the comments section. I'm hoping to be back later in the day with a post that actually pertains to the Chicago Fire. Until then...

Conceptual Inertia. If you think big enough, you'll never have to do it. - Not me
have you ever met ron santo? or any other cub? wrigley field is the best place in the world to be on a hot summer day, agree?
I have not met Ron Santo. Though I love him on the radio. He's certainly not the most insightful analyst I've ever heard, but his emotion -- completely unmatched. And Wrigley is the best. No doubt.
Will any of the games in Guadalajara be televised/available for streaming?
(and Amen to the WTC, Wire and 30 Rock...did you see this: http://www.hulu.com/watch/120701/parks-and-recreation-rza-screen-test)
Love the video. I've asked if the games will be televised and am currently waiting on an answer. I don't think they will be however.
I've received word that there will be no TV or streaming for the games in Mexico. It'll be the same set up (i.e. twitter feed) as the Phoenix games.
Dude... V is a favorite movie? That's like calling Howard the Duck a classic...
What can I say? I like the movie...
Nice to know alittle more about yu' Sam. Just a little tidbit on myself, I'm a music producer and I saw you like both sports & music so check out this new mash up me and a friend of mine did for sportsuntapped.com when you get the chance!

I'm the guy who posts your link on big soccer. I'm also a huge Cub fan. While your 19 and I'm 63 I consider myself lucky in that I've have had a great life so far.
This was entertaining for me. I'm sure there are bigger things in the world the our beloved Fire but hey good to have a guy that answers question and is willing to ask question. I like this blog but maybe you can reach out to section 8 and have then visit or throw a comment here and there... Just trying to help out...

Cubs? Really? And you otherwise seem like such a rational guy.
Nice post. Coming from a fellow center mid/complainer, nice post.
I enjoyed the post and good to get to know you. Soccer in the Sun and Shadow is probably my favorite soccer book. An excellent read. I just bought Soccernomics this past weekend.
Hey Sam. It sound like you no longer play soccer competively? If not, why did you stop playing?
Went off to college and wasn't anywhere near good enough to play NCAA. I play Intramural here at school but for now that's about all I can fit in.

Blood Diamond is personally my favourite movie of all time!.. Leo was unbelivable in that role!
