Pappa on board through 2012

Marco Pappa

The Fire and Marco Pappa have come to terms on a new deal to keep the 21-year-old winger at Toyota Park through 2012.

Pappa, who had been on loan to the Fire from Guatemalan team CSD Municipal, had his league option exercised and will join a growing group of out-of-contract players returning to Bridgeview for the 2010 season.

"We are very excited to have such a young talent like Marco Pappa back with our club next season," said Fire Technical Director Frank Klopas. "He was a big contributor to the team in 2009 and has tremendous potential moving forward. He brings a lot of passion to the game and we look forward to having him remain with the Fire over the coming years." Pappa is also excited about returning to the Fire, which he joined in July of 2008.

"I'm very happy about returning to the Fire," said Pappa. "This is a club that I want to build my future with and I want our fans to know that I'm going to give all my efforts in helping our team be successful and win the MLS Cup."

I think Frank Klopas and the Fire front office is making another good player decision by bringing Pappa back. Though he tailed off a bit at the end of last year, Pappa enjoyed a solid campaign and there's no reason to think that he won't expand upon his five goal, four assist 2009.

  • Fantastic news, I was worried about Pappa leaving, but now we know CJ, McBride and Pappa will be back, add a DP and a good coach into the mix and we should be solid next year.

  • Good to hear we're keeping Pappa. I think he will improve next year.

  • I think Pappa paired with Tim Ward will be a very dangerous combination if we can also get another striker.

  • This is great news, one of the big parts of our team, and very good news indeed. I am becoming more confident in this Klopas and the owner, they do mean business, and I feel these will be Pappa's good years. Let's hope he stays the entire time.

  • So the 2 moves the Fire have made this off season are losing The Menace and signing Pappa to a 3 year deal BEFORE the CBA is decided. They are 2 for 2 right now.

  • I'm a step closer to season tickets now! Toews, Kane, Keith will get bigger headlines but this a a huge signing.

  • Tremendous! Pappa can be a little inconsistent, but he's one of our best players. It almost makes up for losing Rolfe (not really, but we've gotta be optimistic.)

Any word on what we're paying him, or will we have to wait for the union to release salaries next year?

  • In reply to Byron:

There's nothing official, but word is that he'll be one of the higher paid players on the team. So that's a pretty definitive six figures coming Pappa's way.

  • In reply to Byron:

Things are shaping up pretty well. Another EXCELLENT move by Klopas, let him know that we all think he's doing great tomorrow, somebody. Pappa is going to be the key member of the midfield next year, if he's healthy we'll be pretty good. I also am sure that Klopas will get a good DP for us. Then it'll be great soccer at TP.

  • In reply to Byron:

Awesome. Now, let's just get Guillermo S. and that Polish guy everyone is high on and we'll be set. Whoops, don't we need a defender or two, or is Conde coming back. By the way, Stan, you're going to have swap out some players on your banner.

Lets give'em Mapp + draft picks for GBS. Think they'll bite?

  • In reply to oliotya:

I say we bring DaMarcus Beasly back!

  • In reply to ChicagoFire8:

I think we should worry about getting a right footed midfielder first.
