Morning Links

Netherlands v Romania - Group C Euro 2008

Yesterday afternoon was a busy one in the world of soccer. I didn't update then, so we're getting caught up now...

In an announcement that certainly surprised me (just take a look at yesterday's morning links for proof...), [Landon Donovan has signed a new deal with the L.A. Galaxy which will keep him at the club through 2013](http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-galaxy-donovan17-2009dec17,0,2931949.story). The deal, which reportedly will pay him $9 million over four years, allows Donovan to pursue short term European loans during the MLS offseason. Donovan's already taking advantage of that clause, having agreed in principle to head to Everton for a 10 week loan beginning on January 1st.

It's nice to see Donovan stick around in MLS. He's been the face of MLS for a long time and knowing that the best American field layer is going to stay -- and market -- the American league is comforting.

On another note, [the U.S. Soccer Federation announced yesterday that a friendly against the Netherlands has been scheduled for March 3rd](http://www.ussoccer.com/News/Mens-National-Team/2009/12/US-to-Face-Third-Ranked-Netherlands-on-March-3-in-Amsterdam.aspx) -- the lone FIFA date between now and the start of the World Cup. The match, which will be played at Amsterdam ArenA (which is a very cool stadium by the way, check it out in person if you get the chance), will be the fourth time the two nations have squared off. The Netherlands is ranked third in the FIFA World Rankings.

Also, [D.C.'s scrambling as the list of head coaching candidates who have turned them down has grown to three](http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2009/12/dccoachsearch.html). I'm sure some of you are taking a little bit of joy out of that one...

I'll be back later on today with a Fire related article. Check back for it.

  • Landycakes is only staying in the MLS because he is scared to play overseas. I think he is my least favorite player in the game today. This is the only time he will go overseas and its because of the WC in June. He is the only player in the MLS that would pick MLS over going to Europe. He cant handle not being the center of the team that he is on. Just look at how he handled the Beckham situation.
