World Cup Qualifying Thread

With the South American qualifiers about to finish up and the CONCACAF qualifiers about to start, it's about time for me to get a World Cup Qualifier thread started.

I'll be sharing some thoughts/observations on the qualifiers throughout the evening, and I encourage you to do the same.  I'll also be posting the winner of the U.S.-Costa Rica first goal contest on this thread, so stay tuned for that.  Enjoy the matches.

  • First update of the night: no Cuauhtemoc Blanco in Mexico's starting lineup. That's good news for the Fire -- who traditionally don't play Blanco on Saturday's after he plays a Wednesday night qualifier.

  • Argentina wraps up the fourth spot in CONMEBOL to qualify for the World Cup. Uruguay, who fell to Argentina 1-0 tonight, finished in 5th in the group and they will play either Costa Rica or Honduras in a two-game playoff to punch a ticket to South Africa.

  • Costa Rica takes a one goal lead over the States as Bryan Ruiz slots one home in the 22nd minute. Costa Rica, who need a win to qualify for the Cup, is one step closer...

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

Correction on the goal, it came in the 20th minute of play. That means that JayMiggy (who predicted the first goal would come in the 21st minute) wins the contest. Congrats JayMiggy!

The U.S. isn't the only CONCACAF big boy currently losing their qualifier as Mexico is trailing Trinidad & Tobago 1-0 in Port of Spain. Honduras and El Salvador are currently tied at 0 at the half.

If the current results hold, the U.S. will finish first, Mexico second and Costa Rica third. Honduras would take on Uruguay in the play-in games.

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

How do they determine what group we're in?

  • In reply to patrickhattrick:

The draw for the World Cup takes place in December. Not exactly sure how the process is run though. I'll try and find a link for you.

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

Mexico and Trinidad are at 2-2 in the 70th minute.

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

Game on in D.C. as the U.S. comes one closer to Costa Rica through Michael Bradley. 2-1 Costa Rica now, 20 minutes to go.

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

    Halftime thoughts-
Defense has looked out of shape, probably fatigue is the problem there. Onyewu and Bradley got absolutely torched on the goals. Donovan looks weak tonight, also probably tired because of so many recent games. Casey and Jozy look outstanding.
PS Sam did you see me and my friends at practice on Monday? I hope it was you I was waving at and not some stranger.

  • In reply to patrickhattrick:

Thanks for the attempted wave Patrick, but it wasn't me at practice. You probably creeped some random stranger out though, ha.

With 15 seconds left in second half stoppage time, Jonathan Bornstein puts the U.S. level with Costa Rica! Unbelievable finish to an unbelievable game. Fantastic goal by Bornstein.

The U.S. finishes the qualifying campaign in first place, Mexico (who tied 2-2 with Trinidad & Tobago) comes in second, and Honduras nabs the final spot in the World Cup with a 1-0 at El Salvador.

Heartbreak for Costa Rica, who finish the qualifying campaign in 4th place. They have some work to do now as they will play Uruguay in a home-and-home playoff for a spot in the World Cup. You have to feel for the Ticos, they came so, so close.

  • In reply to patrickhattrick:

WHAT A FINISH! After Bradley's goal in the 70th my dad turned to me and said: "This is going to be a good twenty minutes."
How right he was. I started giving up as stoppage time winded down, but then Bradley did it. Perfect header, with Charlie Davies as the emotional value of the game. The postgame celebration was special, with all the 9s. That, all in all, was probably one of the most dramatic soccer games I have ever seen.

  • In reply to patrickhattrick:

Blanco came into the Mexico game in the 55th minute. I wonder how that will affect his availability Saturday?

  • Ruiz absolutely buries a 20 yard shot into the upper 90. Costa Rica is now up 2-0 on the States just 24 minutes in. The U.S. defense is looking very sloppy...
