Sounders take home US Open Cup

Osvaldo Alonso

The expansion Seattle Sounders have added a trophy to an already remarkable first MLS season, [winning the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Wednesday night with a 2-1 victory over D.C. United at RFK Stadium.](

With the win the Sounders -- who got their goals from Fredy Montero and Roger Levesque -- become only the second expansion franchise to win the U.S. Open Cup. The first team to accomplish that feat? The 1998 Chicago Fire, who eventually went on to win the MLS Cup.

Now hopefully the 2009 edition of the Fire will have something to say about the Sounders pulling off the double, but only time will tell on that one...

  • I'm not so sure the Fire will have to say about that, but congrats Sounders, my second-favorite team in MLS.

  • Man, if only our staff would have been smarted to put a real team on the field, we might not be watching the Sounders holding up that Cup.
