Matchday: 8-9

The Fire and Houston are set to kick off in a little more than three hours, so it's time for me to get the Matchday thread going.

The Fire need a win to keep pace with first place Columbus, who beat San Jose 3-0 yesterday.  I'll be posting some thoughts I have on the play in the comments section (In real time no less...) during the match so look out for that.

Enjoy the game.  It should be a good one...

  • I'm looking forward to the gamecast. I'm on holiday in San Francisco and have no access to Direct Kick. This is a huge game for the bhoys and I'm hoping for a huge six point swing.

  • They're about to get underway at Robertson Stadium in Houston. Here are the starting lineups:

    Fire --

    Bench --

Dykstra, Robinson, Banner, Husidic, Woolard, Mapp, Carr

    Houston --

    Bench --

Hall, Chabala, Waibel, Cruz, Ustruck, Akinbiyi, Oduro

  • 3rd Minute --

Gonzalo goes down with what appears to be a left leg injury, doesn't look to good. He limped off.

Busch with a nice save off a low shot.

  • 4th minute --

Dynamo are looking dangerous. Busch has been forced into a couple saves already with the latest coming off of a headed corner.

Segares is done. Woolard comes in for him. Rough start...

  • 10th --

Fire started the match very slowly. Just now starting to get some possession...

  • 12th --

Rolfe with the Fire's first shot. A long range effort with not a whole lot of steam on it, tested the keeper though.

  • 18th --

The game has settled down a bit. Not a whole lot going on right now..

  • 19th --

Good sequence between Blanco and Pappa leads to a lay off to Pause who's shot from 25 yards goes wide.

  • 21st --

Cameron with a throw in to a wide open Kei Kamara in the 18 and Kamara turns and shoots, blasting a right footed effort from just to the right of the six past Busch.

Fire come back with a chance of their own, goes wide though.

  • 24th --

Nyarko does well to earn a corner. Blanco to take

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

    Headed out for another corner...

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

    Nothing doing on this one

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

Fire with a great chance as Blanco runs on to a long ball and is alone with the keeper but is unable to get a shot off as a Houston defender makes a great slide tackle to deflect it out for a corner.

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

Kamara with another great chance as he is able to slip in unmarked but he slotted his 1 v 1 chance with Busch wide. Lucky break for the Fire, should be 2-0.

Also, feel free to comment if you are following along.

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

CJ Brown picks up a yellow card for a foul on Brian Ching just outside the box. Houston's shot misses the target though

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

    37th --

Brian Ching lofts a ball from the right wing to the far side of box and Ricardo Clark runs on to it and hits it over Jon Busch who had come out but was unable to get there.

Also, Rolfe picks up a yellow.

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

Are we marking that poorly or is Houston just playing that well?

  • In reply to ForzaRosso:

It's a little of both. The first goal was just pathetic marking but the second was more of a good play from Houston.

  • In reply to ForzaRosso:

    47th --

Blanco plays a ball to Nyarko who lays it off to Rolfe around 30 yards out. Rolfe took a few touches to the right and hits one from 25 beating Onstad low to the far post. Fantastic goal and now we have a game...

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

Chris Rolfe is getting laid tonight!

  • In reply to ForzaRosso:

    48th --

Unbelievable goal for the Fire. Bakary Soumare played a long ball down the right win to Blanco who originally wasn't able to get to it but stripped Julius James and hit a perfect left footed cross to the far post where Lowry thundered a sliding right footed volley past Onstad. What. A. Goal.

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

Correction -- CJ Brown provided the long ball that sprung Blanco. Baky was watching from the bench as he got subbed out for Mike Banner at the half.

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

    59th --

After picking up a leg injury after a Brian Ching tackle (which he earned a yellow card for...) Daniel Woolard has to be subbed off. Dasan Robinson comes in for him and the Fire are done with their subs. Some real bad luck for the Fire tonight

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

    62nd --

    Rolfe picks up a yellow.

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

    Isn't that his second?!

  • In reply to ForzaRosso:

The card wasn't Rolfe's second, Prideaux picked up the card earlier when I wrote that Rolfe had. Sorry for the confusion.

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

    73rd --

Card on Blanco for a silly foul from behind. He claps at referee Terry Vaughn (who is always card-happy, remember the Fire-Chivas game?) but the card was fully deserved

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

    79th --

Houston starting to apply the pressure. They've had a few good chances in the last couple minutes, culminating in a Stuart Holden run into the box snuffed out by the Fire back line.

We have another Houston sub too. Oduro comes on for Kamara, looking to provide a little pace in the front.

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

    83rd --

    Penalty kick for Houston...

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

Blasts it home to the left side of the goal. Good penalty. Fire get unlucky though (again...) as the penalty was a bit soft. It was called on Brandon Prideaux who's slide tackle on Corey Ashe seemed to have gotten the ball...

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

    85th --

Blanco's chip of a beautiful Pappa back heel hits the far post. So close. Nyarko just missed heading it in.

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

    86th --

Lowry with a great effort that Onstad pushes over the bar.

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

this is a tough game for fire

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

    Houston sub: Akinbiyi for Ching

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

come on fire get it in there!!!

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

Into stoppage time in Houston, there will be 3 minutes.

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

    1 minute left...

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

Well it's final, the Fire fall to Houston by a score of 3-2. I'll have a full match report up soon but until then feel free to post any thoughts you had (or questions about the match..) below.

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

talk about a no call in the box considering houston got a gift of a penalty

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

    69th --

Ching misses an absolute sitter. He gets slotted in behind (again completely unmarked...) and with Busch charging, loses the ball with a heavy touch. However, he wins it back only to hit his shot over an empty Fire net. Ching will be wishing h had that one back...

  • In reply to SamuelStejskal:

    Halftime --

The Fire down 2-0 at the half and it doesn't look very good. The attacking play has been somewhat limited and the chances the Fire has had have been broken up in the box. The team really needs to turn it around in the second half if they want to have any chance of turning it around in the second half.

Also, the defense fell victim to poor marking on both goals and they need to turn it around or things could get really ugly, really quickly.

    Post if you're following along.
