The U.S. Men's National Team is all set to take on Brazil in the FIFA Confederations Cup Final. The match is the first FIFA tournament final for the U.S. team and a win (though it would be an upset...) would really announce the American team's arrival to the big-time.
Today's game (which kicks off at 1 p.m. central on ESPN/ESPN 360) is a rematch of Brazil's 3-0 smack-down of an uninspired U.S. team in Confederations Cup group play on last Thursday. However, today's U.S. team is a much different one from last Thursday's and at the very least, the 'Nats should be a formidable opponent for Brazil.
As is the case with any U.S. match, I am really looking forward to it. As far as predictions go, I really have no clue what to say on this one. The U.S. could pull a second consecutive stunner, they could get crushed, or it could be a hard fought match.
But I think the critical thing for the U.S. is to not fall behind early. Giving up early goals has really hurt the team as of late and if the U.S. comes out strong I think anything could happen.
So, with all of that said, I will go ahead and be a patriotic optimist and say the U.S. will win the final 2-1. Jozy Altidore will get the scoring started in the first half and the U.S. will head in at halftime with a 1-0 advantage. Brazil's big defender Lucio will equalize on a set piece in the second half only to have Landon Donovan take the lead, and the final, for the U.S. with a late winner.
Feel free to share any thoughts/predictions you have about the match.
