U.S. vs. Brazil - Confederations Cup Final

SOCCER: JUN 18 Confederation Cup - Brazil v USA

The U.S. Men's National Team is all set to take on Brazil in the FIFA Confederations Cup Final. The match is the first FIFA tournament final for the U.S. team and a win (though it would be an upset...) would really announce the American team's arrival to the big-time.

Today's game (which kicks off at 1 p.m. central on ESPN/ESPN 360) is a rematch of Brazil's 3-0 smack-down of an uninspired U.S. team in Confederations Cup group play on last Thursday. However, today's U.S. team is a much different one from last Thursday's and at the very least, the 'Nats should be a formidable opponent for Brazil.
As is the case with any U.S. match, I am really looking forward to it. As far as predictions go, I really have no clue what to say on this one. The U.S. could pull a second consecutive stunner, they could get crushed, or it could be a hard fought match.

But I think the critical thing for the U.S. is to not fall behind early. Giving up early goals has really hurt the team as of late and if the U.S. comes out strong I think anything could happen.

So, with all of that said, I will go ahead and be a patriotic optimist and say the U.S. will win the final 2-1. Jozy Altidore will get the scoring started in the first half and the U.S. will head in at halftime with a 1-0 advantage. Brazil's big defender Lucio will equalize on a set piece in the second half only to have Landon Donovan take the lead, and the final, for the U.S. with a late winner.

Feel free to share any thoughts/predictions you have about the match.

  • In case you missed it, the U.S. lost a heart breaker to Brazil in the final today, falling 3-2 to the Selecao.

The U.S. took the early lead after 10 minutes through a pretty volley from Clint Dempsey. Then, remarkably, the Americans doubled the advantage through an absolutely terrific counterattack that saw Charlie Davies and Landon Donovan combine beautifully before Landon smashed home, giving the 'Nats a 2-0 lead at the break.

But the second half was a different story, as the U.S.'s lack of depth showed a little bit and Brazil was able to score three times to take the game and the tournament from the U.S.

Overall it was a very good tournament for the Americans. I thought they played well in every game (minus the first Brazil match) and they had many players really step up and show their worth. Landon Donovan, Tim Howard, and Clint Dempsey stepped up and for me, were the players of the tournament for the Americans. But that isn't to take away from the efforts of any of the other players on the squad. Really, everyone that started the match today played excellent soccer throughout the Confederations Cup and we could very well see some big transfers for a few of the players (Donovan, Davies, Onyewu, DeMerit) in the very near future.
