Recapping Last Week's Orgy Of Lazy Journalism

This is a quick rant. I had to get this off my chest.

Journalism took a hit last week.

Whether it was CNN,New York Post, Fox News or MSNBC, all became willing participants in an orgy of misinformation. These days in journalism, it seems like almost all news outlets are in a rush to be the first to report breaking news regardless of the truth.

Why couldn’t these media outlets, in a 24/7 news cycle, just say this:

'At this point in time,we don’t exactly know what’s going on. When we find something out,you will be the first to know.'

I think people would have understood that the events during the capture of the men responsible for the Boston Marathon bombing were unfolding in real time. In the rush to be the first,CNN got it wrong. They backtracked on their reporting hours later.

I often argue with friends about the media’s role in today’s society. What can I say after the events of the past week?  The general public probably doesn’t trust what they are told by the news anchors. When I watch the news and I hear a reporter say ‘A source close to the situation,’ I cringe. The ‘source’ could be anyone. Someone starting a rumor or the bosses of these networks pushing the envelope to boost ratings. Either way, the people who go to the news for information have no reason to trust what they hear.

How did things get so bad? Why do some news outlets think it is okay to report the news without all of the facts?

Cutting corners in the pursuit of breaking the news sullies the name all of  journalists.  That is the last thing we need right now.
