Why I support Gay Marriage

There’s a reason why church and state are separate. This is about people who deserve to buy property, see loved ones in the hospital, add people on to health insurance etc. You know the things most of us take for take for granted.

I’m for people being able to do whatever they like as long as they are not hurting anyone. People who deny the rights of one group while they are still fighting for inclusion themselves is the very definition of hypocrisy.

Some will say that it’s not the same as civil rights. Never said it was the same. But in terms of denying citizens rights it is. Way back when, blacks weren't considered people, couldnt get married, eat at the same places as white people, etc.

Religious law and constitutional law are two different things. People can use the bible to justifiy almost anything. Case in point: Mormons used to say that black people can be Mormons but could not go to heaven. You may not like gay people but you should respect someone’s right to have the life you would want for yourself.

  • I don't see how some people could claim gay rights do not fall under the umbrella of civil rights...seems like common sense to me.

That said-good post; again, the whole issue seems like common sense to me.

  • that's because those people don't like to compare gay rights to the civil rights movement.

Awesome! Straight to the point. I love this perspective. As long as a person isn't harming anyone, let people live and experience the freedoms most people take for granted. Thanks for sharing!

  • Some very ridiculous arguments here:

    1) I’m for people being able to do whatever they like as long as they are not hurting anyone. Really? So if I want to parade around naked down the streets of downtown Chicago, I should be allowed to? Surely you don't really believe this. We live in a society that has boundaries. It's called civilization.

2)Some will say that it’s not the same as civil rights. Never said it was the same. But in terms of denying citizens rights it is. How so? Who's "rights" are being denied? The law is that no one can marry the same sex whether homosexual or not. The law applies to both groups equally. We don't have separate laws for people attracted to the same sex. Should I be allowed to marry my cat if I want to? And if not, by your argument, my "rights" are being violated. Further, how does one explain former homosexuals? I have seen former homosexuals, I have never seen a former black..

  • 1. you can if you want.
    2. the rights of u.s. citizens.

  • Very well stated, Evan!

You echo my sentiments exactly. It's an equality issue. With all men created equal, one man (or woman) should not be denied a right that is afforded to another.

I like the fact that you did it in so few words, too!

  • I support gay marriage because it will boost the economy. Just imagine the increase in wedding gift registry buying that gays will bring to the table.

  • Well said and to the point. I have many gay friends who love their partners deeply. They want to share the same union as straight people. No reason they shouldn't be able to. And wicubfan can marry her cat. Great post Evan.
