Remember the 844 ...

At approximately 7:29 AM on a dreary, drizzly Saturday morning 99 years ago today, the SS Eastland, loaded with 2570 people (2500 passengers, 70 crew/vendors) capsized in the murky, disease-laden Chicago River. By 7:31 AM, the steamer had come to rest on the river bottom in only 20 feet of water. Within minutes, 844 souls perished.

22 entire families ceased to exist. *

* In George W. Hilton's nonfiction book, Eastland, Legacy of the Titanic, Hilton states, "The disaster wiped out 22 whole families." He does not provide a list of those families. Utilizing his thoroughly researched "List of Victims," I have based my list on complete families (parents plus children) lost and families (parents) that lost all of their children.
