Single? In a relationship? Happily playing the field (aka totes updating your OkCupid profile on a daily basis)? I don't know about you, but I'm a fan of Valentine's Day not for the presents I get from my suitors, but because of all the everyday items inevitably turn heart-shaped and glitter-covered.
If you don't have Valentine's Day plans, there's still time! These are my top dance picks this week perfect for a date...or for you to go to yourself and really embrace your "me" time. Here goes.
- Joffrey's American Legends: DUH. This one's a no-brainer for V-day you guys. The acclaimed company puts on a romantic and sensual night of pieces from the likes of Jerome Robbins, Twyla Tharp, Gerald Arpino, and Stanton Welch. Particularly looking forward to Tharp's Nine Sinatra Songs, costumed by Oscar de la Renta (love!).
- Thodos' A Light in the Dark: This is pretty cool. Thodos puts on a dance theater performance about Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan (Keller's teacher) and how Sullivan led Keller into a life of activism and intellectual celebrity. Part of the proceeds go to The Chicago Lighthouse, an organization for the visually impaired. It's coming to Harris Theater March 3, but catch it at the North Shore Center in Skokie this weekend (fieldtrip!).
- Learn to Tango at Dance SPA: This is my favorite! For $28 you and your date get an hour-long tango lesson, cocktails, and a champagne toast. The studio is in Bucktown, so after you inevitably embarrass yourself a la The Bachelor and that ballroom dance date with Ben Flajnik, you can go out for handcrafted cocktails.
- DanceWorks Eat to the Beat: Need lunch plans for V-day? Head over to Harris Theater on Thursday, where for $5 you get to see a special performance from DanceWorks, plus some really cool lunch options from food trucks (Tamale Spaceship will be there--their tacos are amazing). If you're feeling like a boozy lunch, they'll have sparkling wine (two glasses for $10)!
Good luck with your Valentine's Day plans lovers! Kisses!
