Young girl battles brain tumor: How you can help

My friend and colleague Kristen Ramirez recently reached out to me to help spread the word about a young girl battling a brain tumor. This is 4-year-old Meera's story--and how you can help her.

Meera was one of Kristen's first ballet students at her dance studio, Baby Take a Bow, in Roscoe Village. Meera loved to dance and a had a passion for ballet, but earlier this year her love for dance was put on hold. Meera was diagnosed with an anaplastic medulloblastoma tumor next to the cerebellum. The tumor was successfully removed during brain surgery in January 2012, but the anaplastic nature of the tumor calls for chemotherapy and radiation to deter cancer cells from spreading. Because of the tumor’s proximity to the cerebellum, Meera’s movement, posture, and balance were impaired.  She is now in rehab trying to regain her motor skills.

Baby Take a Bow will host Twirling for Meera, a fundraising event, this Sunday, August 12, to help ease the financial burden for Meera’s family. During Twirling for Meera, Baby Take a Bow will host free ballet workshops from noon to 2 p.m. The studio will donate 10% of purchases and fall enrollments to Meera and her family. Donations are highly encouraged.
