As I write this it's 14 degrees outside. There's snow on the ground. I'd say a little Winter Fire wouldn't hurt.
It sounds like the Joffrey Ballet is bringing the heat with it's mixed repertory winter program "Winter Fire," opening this Wednesday, February 16. The acclaimed group will have two premieres (one U.S. and one company) plus the emotionally juiced piece that never gets old, "After the Rain," by Christopher Wheeldon.
The first premiere brings British choreographer Wayne McGregor's (of The Royal Ballet) "Infra" to the U.S. for the first time. Twelve dancers set to strings and industrial sounds, plus an LED screen, with undertones of the 2005 London subway bombings. Sounds pretty heavy.
The second premiere is William Forsythe's "In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated." Joffrey has performed this in excerpts before, but will perform the whole piece in this program.
I don't think the premieres will be anything less than stellar, but the program is worth seeing for "After the Rain" alone. Don't miss it: February 15-26 at Auditorium Theatre.
