This Week in Chicago Dance: Mordine & Co., Civic Opera Ballet

This weekend the Joffrey continues Eclectica, an impressive compilation of classical and contemporary pieces. But there are a couple of other performances worth checking out.

Mordine & Co., the innovative company known for fresh and adventurous choreography, presents Next, performed at Epiphany Episcopal Church in the West Loop. The Romanesque architecture should make for a powerful setting for the eight-member company to dance against. Next features the premiere of I Haven't Gone There, by Shirley Mordine, and set to music by Mark Messing and members of Mucca Pazza. The show is this weekend only, May 7-9.

On a more classical note, the Civic Ballet Chicago opens To Larry with Love, this weekend. A tribute to the company's late co-founder Larry Long, the performance is a collection of works to celebrate his work and his life. Dolores Lipinski, Larry's wife and current Artistic Director, restaged Larry's choreography and created a video montage tribute for the show. The show is at Ruth Page Center for the Arts, May 7-16.
