In a world where celebrities are now considered top designers, Kate Hudson is also joining that new movement towards becoming a "designer" herself. Kate is now co-founder of a new athletic wear website called "Fabletics." This new website is not just an e-commerce store for active wear but as Kate describes it, " it is a community. " So how does it work? Like other sites you have to take a quiz, afterwards they site hand selects garments that you would like based on your personality (I guess they don't take into consideration that we are different people sometimes daily). Then monthly they select garments that you would wear and send it to you! Yep, you can choose to keep those or return them back. Nuff said.
My issue with this is that first, I hate when celebrities TRY being designers. Do you know how to create a garment out of scratch? Do you know how to even sew?? Then NO you are not a designer. Having been a design student, I understand how difficult fashion design really is. People feel that it is a easy career to get into, boy are they wrong. With all these so called celebrity designers, many people are staying away from legit designers who are trying to enter this already impossible industry. I had a student recently argue with me that Selena Gomez was a fashion designer! Nope honey, she is licensing out her name; she is NOT a designer. Most of these beginning students (I teach a college freshman course) didn't know who the GREATS of fashion such as Coco Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, nor Hubert De Givenchy (those are just a few, there are MANY more). So yes as a fashion person this is frustrating that the youngsters of today are losing account of the real fashion industry.
Back to Fabletics with Kate Hudson, I personally believe this is a great idea for those who like others to take initiative for them (such as sending them clothing they would wear). I personally like to select my own pieces. Also to call Kate Hudson a designer is far fetched. She is a spokesperson/co-founder but NOT a designer. They have the real designers in the back designing which celebrities such as herself take the credit. So have fun wearing all these garments from these celebrity designers, but never, never call them a fashion designer.
