A few weeks ago I was invited to be the last minute addition to team Braking Bad at a Cycle for Survival event where you take a spin class for anywhere between one and four hours to raise money for a worthy cause. In that case it was Sloan Kettering Cancer Centers and the fight against rare cancers. I'd had a lot of fun at the event since it was basically a party mixed with a workout.
So when I saw the email about a similar event called Spin to Break the Cycle on March 8th I was intrigued. Which meant that when Spin to Break the Cycle contacted me to see if I wanted to participate as a member of the media I was all ears. Or eyes. I mean, it was an email.
From their press release: What if someone told you that an hour spin workout could help stop violence in Chicago – would you step up to the bike? Cyclists and spinning enthusiasts of all levels are invited to World Sport Chicago’s inaugural Spin to Break the Cycle.
Some unique aspects of this event?
It takes place in the House of Blues! That's right; they're taking over the entire music venue with spin bikes, DJs, massages and spin instructors from Fitness Formula Club.
Participants will receive an Under Armour shirt, product swag from various sponsors, and spectators can cheer from the Opera Box seats.
It's $30 to register and then they ask that you raise $300 per hour you or your team want to spin. That may seem like a lot of money but every dollar raised is going towards programs and services offered by World Sport Chicago, an organization that focuses on building leadership and relationship skills through engaging children in various sports. I wasn't a sporty kid myself, but research does show that these programs can decrease violence and bolster graduation rates. And, as we all know, there is no panacea to solving the youth violence problem in Chicago but it's better to do something than nothing, right?
And the best part? If you want to participate but don't want to ask people for money (seriously, I am THE WORST) I have TWO complimentary entries to give away to the event on March 8th. You can choose to ride any time between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM with sessions starting at the top of each hour. I'll be there at 11:00 AM riding my tail off if you want to join me, but you can pick whatever time you want. No fundraising necessary although donations would be appreciated, I'm sure.
How do you enter? Just tell me the last time you rode a bike. And, yes, stationary bikes count. That's it. Leave a comment, tweet at me on Twitter (I'm @looplooks) or send me an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. I'll pick two names on Wednesday, February 26th. PLEASE make sure I have a way to contact you!
And if you don't win? You can sign up as an individual or get together a team and register online.
So, let's get our butts kicked while helping World Sport Chicago kick some butt as well!
