This Saturday kicks off Chicago's Bike Week.
The cycling community, led by the Active Transportation Alliance, the chainlink, Grid Chicago, and other advocates, has coordinated an incredible line-up of events to highlight the fun that can be experienced on two wheels.
The celebration of cycling actually begins Friday night at The Lobby at 36 E. Grand with an art show featuring six artists' interpretations of the bicycle (Re-Cycle).
It kicks into high gear on Saturday with your choice of several different rides including a beer run to Three Floyds Brewery, a tour of urban farms, a spin along Chicago's buffered bike lanes, or a spotlight on cargo bikes. The day culminates with the World Naked Bike Ride - an eye-opening event to draw attention to bicycling as an earth-friendly transportation alternative while promoting positive body image at the same time.
Bike-themed movie viewing is another fun-filled way to celebrate cycling next week. Visit the Goose Island Brewpub Monday night for a screening of "Bike Shorts." On Tuesday, choose between riding your bike to the Whole Foods Market in Lincoln Park for an outdoor viewing of "The Breakfast Club" or head to Millennium Park for the cycling cult classic "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure." That's a tough choice - a rebel without a cause or a rebel without a bike...
Let's not forget the ATA's Bike Commuter Challenge this week. Staffers from Chicago's voice for bicycling have been working continually throughout the year to recruit individuals and organizations to commit to bicycle commuting. There's still time for you and your fellow workers to get involved.
