I didn't even think we would get our round in yesterday judging from the weather in the morning. I woke up to 50 degree temperatures and an overcast sky. Figuring it was going to stay cool and, possibly rain, silly me wore the wrong clothing. My how fall can hinder your judgement out on the links. OK, enough about fashion on the links.
Now on to my course review of The Village Links Of Glen Ellyn.
This is by far one of my favorite courses in the Chicagoland area. Not only is it a convenient location from my home. It's always in very good shape. If your not a V.I.P. card holder though, it can get a little pricey.
Village Links does a really good job of taking care of their players. In early spring they run a special for $175. You can play all the golf you can until the end of April. Then through the month of May you get 50% of regular priced greens fees. Not a bad deal considering regular season play will set you back $62 including a motorized cart. Purchasing a V.I.P. card for $50 discounts your regularly priced round and, merchandise in the club house by 20% for the year. Right now during their "Fall Fest", Village Links is offering a 50% discount on Mondays and Tuesdays on their regularly priced greens fees. And guess what? V.I.P. card holders still get a 20% discount off the 50% off rate!
Village Links is a top caliber course as it has played host to many prestigious qualifying events. This years event being The U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier. In years past, some of these events included The Illinois State Match Play Championship, Western Open Qualifying, U.S. Amateur Qualifying too name a few.
Visiting Village Links gives you options. You can play the 9 hole course or the 18 hole. They have an excellent practice facility which consists of a driving range area, two practice putting greens and a separate chipping and sand bunker area. The unique feature is that these areas are spread out over different sections of the property which creates a nice flowing feel to the property. You don't feel like your on top of other golfers like the feeling that comes with other courses with the same amenities. They also have a full service restaurant that has good burgers and friendly service.
Sporting 119 sand bunkers and water on 15 of the 18 holes, this is a shot makers course. Standing in the tee box with a grip-it and rip-it attitude is going to get you into plenty of trouble. If you don't have the ability to a play controlled golf game. Be ready to pay the price. Spraying the ball on this course is going to leave you wet or spitting sand. The greens are some of the toughest you'll putt. Bring your best stroke or get ready to three putt a lot of greens. Not only are the slopes and undulations going to get you, but the speed of these greens is like a bead of water on a windshield traveling at 60 M.P.H. Now you get the picture why so many qualifying and championship events have been played here.
Locate in the west suburbs of Glen Ellyn 35 miles west of Chicago sits a course waiting for you to play. You won't be disappointed even at full fair. If you live close enough consider the V.I.P. card and save. The grounds crew do a great job of maintaining the course and you'll never be disappointed with the aesthetics.
