Last week my wife and I had the opportunity to play in a golf outing at Carriage Greens Golf Course in Darien Il. The tournament was for the American Cancer Society, but benefits two specific individuals. Lee Bauers and Dee Fors. All money raised is donated to the American Cancer Society in the names of these two ladies, friends of Linda White who organizes this tournament every year.
Why This Is So Special
A friend of ours, Linda White, runs this tournament every year on the second Saturday in August. Linda, being a cancer survivor herself, started this tournament eight years ago in 2005 and has been the orchestrator ever since. Currently the golfers who make up most of the foursomes are friends and family of friends Linda works with at Navistar. The first year Linda organized the tournament she had 35 golfers. This year with her ongoing efforts, Linda was able to entice 118 golfers to show up for this great cause. She broke her pervious record this year and donated $3,000 in honor of Lee and Dee. Something she would like to keep growing year after year but she could use your help.
Interviewing Linda for this article I was surprised to find out that, on a good year, she ends up coming up with around $300-$400 dollars of her own funds to make this tournament work. Some years her out-of-pocket costs can reach as high as $700. But the kind of person I know Linda to be says, "I don't mind my out-of-pocket expenses because it's for a good cause." Linda tells me that, "most of my out-of-pocket expense is due to the fact that I want everyone to get a prize who buys a raffle ticket, and I don't get enough donations in prizes to cover that, so I buy my own." I think Linda could use some help with donations.
Linda used to play in the outing every year being an avid golfer herself. The past couple of years she has had to be content with riding around in the cart because, "in order for me to run this the right way, it gets to be to much to play in the tournament. Plus I want to make sure all my golfers are enjoying themselves, so I ride hole to hole to make sure they are", she says. I don't know many people with a bigger heart than that.
How You Can Help
Linda struggles every year to make sure all golfers walk away with a prize. She could use help with donations for her golfers, or, if your interested, you can attend the event next year. I would hope that all my fellow golfers in the area would consider helping Linda out next year, and get your foursomes together. Too play in the outing the cost this year was $85 per golfer. $70 went towards your greens fee's and food. Linda has a BBQ after the outing with hotdogs, hamburgers, brats and beverages. And $15 for prizes.
If you know someone who has or had cancer, this would be a way for you to show your support. It's a great cause run by one of the kindest persons I've met. Linda has a big heart and an even bigger personality. I hope you can show some kindness back to her and help in whatever way you can.
To help out, Linda can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. Send her an email and she will be glad to put you on her list and send you periodic details for next years event.
