I recently had the chance to test the all-new 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid in Santa Fe, NM, and all I have to say is: WOW! I've driven most of the hybrids on the road, and while many of them a pretty good, this is better. From the way the Jetta Hybrid drives to the fuel economy to ride and handling to comfort ... this car is, hands-down, the best hybrid I've driven to date. We were driving through mountainous terrain, and I wasn't trying particularly hard to be a fuel-efficient driver (surprise). Yet, with the Jetta Hybrid, it was easy to get decent fuel economy. After 70 miles, me and my partner were averaging 45 mpg. At the end of the trip, our average was 46 mpg. And that was in the mountains. High altitude. Lots of inclines. Imagine what this car could do in a flat, urban environment ... Personally I can't wait to find out.
The Jetta Hybrid goes on sale this month, and will have a base price of $24,995. Some other important stats:
- Estimated MPG: 45 mpg
- Electric mode speed: Up to 44 mph
- Electric-only range: Up to 1.2 miles
- Cargo volume: 11.3 cubic-feet (aka 7 Ciminillos)
- Horsepower: 170
- Torque: 184 pound-feet
