Today's Rave: Toyota RAV4 rear-view camera

Rear-view backup camera in the 2011 Toyota RAV4 Sport.Imagine that. Putting a camera in the rear-view mirror. You know, where your eyes naturally go when you're backing out of a parking spot. Sometimes you have to wonder why this didn't catch on sooner. I have seen this feature in Ford and GM vehicles, but this is the first time I've seen it in a Toyota.

The test vehicle was an AWD RAV4 Sport model with the 3.5-liter V-6 engine ($27,055). This is a $475 stand-alone option, or you can get it as a part of one of the Appearance Packages ($1,762 or $1,922). I think it's certainly worth that $475, and potentially more, depending on other options you want. The monitor is well integrated into the mirror, and serves perfectly as a third or fourth set of eyes.
The only thing more I'd want: those red, yellow and green lines that help you see how close you actually are to an obstacle.
