You say "Potayto," I say "Potahto....We say "Eeko," while the Blue Oval says "Echo." Potayto," "Potahto," "Eeko," "Echo," lets call the whole SUV thing ON. The 2018 Ford Ecosport (pronounced "Echo-Sport") is the purveyor of mostly truck's newest foray onto the urban personal sports activity vehicle stage.

2018 Ford EcoSport highlights:

- Starting price, including destination = $20,990 S front-drive gas 1.0L I-4, 6-speed automatic. As-tested SES = 2.0L gas I-4, AWD = $26,740

- Corporate wide octagonal grille, flying buttress A-pillars are supplemented by belt + cheat line door creases and de-rigeur dark plastic lower body cladding. White LED DRLs are present and accounted for. Over-sized wheel arches are pushed further to the corners for an impression of greater size.

- Instruments = large twin analog gauge cluster w/ comprehensive LCD color MFD; Controls = deep center stack includes nearly elegant automatic climate control, connectivity ports and secondary operation switches; Over-sized steering wheel includes redundant audio, MFD and cruise control switches lacking  tactile distinction. 8.0"-inch touch LCD tri-split media screen = dash-top pod, easy to reach with positive input reactivity; Infotainment menus = Sync3 is a leader in menu logic, and versatile voice commands; Android Auto/ Apple Car Play = included.

- Cabin panel embellishments are saddle tan hard plastic; Dash-top sections and door armrest areas = pliable. Some coarse grain hard plastic panels exhibit noticeable uneven panel gaps. Generous insulation makes for good immunity from road or powertrain sounds.

- Ballistic type cloth front bucket seats sit slightly tall and are narrow of cushion. 2nd Row knee room is sparing, while cushions are thin. After the exceptional dual compartment glovebox and passenger dashboard shelf. There is a narrow center armrest bin, but door pocket space is sparse all around. The cargo hatch door swings to the left. Inclusion of a tire sealant inflator renders a low load floor, allowing for taller loads

- 2.0L direct injected DOHC gas I-4 engine + 6-speed automatic gearbox = peppy in urban setting, less so on the motorway;

- Heavy weighted steering wind-up is anodyne, demanding more on-center correction. Turn radius is city tight. Taughter damping on SES model can't dispel rebound jounce. The short wheelbase and tall clearance announce body roll; 4-wheel disc brakes offer meaty if long pedal reaction.

- Observed 26 MPG trails most of the competition.

- 2000 lb. [AWD] tow rating blows away most of the competition.
